Karina has compiled a thorough and practical guidebook for the professional therapist. The instruction in care of our most valuable tool, ourselves, will help many therapists sustain a long and healthy practice. --Anita Shannon, Founder, ACE Massage Cupping
In Creating Peace with Your Hands, Karina Braun shares her experience of going from a 300-hour massage therapy program to work 10-hour shifts, four days a week in a Las Vegas hotel spa. In that short program, instructors paid minimal attention to body mechanics. Consequently, like 78 percent of massage therapists, Braun developed the kind of chronic overuse injuries that cut short many therapists careers. Fuelled by her passion for massage therapy, she resolved not to change her vocation, but used her down time to research her condition, study nerve entrapment syndromes as well as more skilled ways of working, and then she finally wrote this heart-felt, useful and informative self-care manual to contribute her experience and the knowledge gained to our profession. Herein, she describes proper body mechanics in detail. She explains how to create an injury prevention strategy for yourself as you create a care plan for your client that might, for example, include hydrotherapy applications to make the session more efficient. She discusses yoga, breathing practices, traditional Chinese exercises, nutritional considerations, and concludes with an overview of the human energy system. Highly recommended especially for new therapists! Karina Braun wrote this heart-felt, useful and informative self-care manual to contribute her experience and the knowledge gained to our profession. Creating Peace with Your Hands offers a candid depict of how we, as caregivers and healers, injure our own bodies by neglecting the basic principles of body mechanics. I found Karina s book both enlightening and educational. I would highly recommend this book to all who venture into the healing domain. --Deb Lazarski, PT
