9780981734224: Ain't No Grave: The Life and Legacy of Brother Claude Ely (Book and CD)

Ain't No Grave: The Life and Legacy of Brother Claude Ely is written as an oral, biographical history taken from the recorded interviews of more than 1,000 people in the Appalachian Mountains who knew Brother Claude Ely. Coined as the King Recording Label s Gospel Ranger, Brother Claude Ely was well-known and loved by many in the earlier part of the 20th century as both a religious singer-songwriter and a Pentecostal-Holiness preacher. Few people, however, knew the personal details of his childhood, military service, and years of hard work in the coal fields of southwestern Virginia.

About the Author:

MACEL ELY II, author of Ain't No Grave: The Life & Legacy of Brother Claude Ely is the great nephew to Reverend Claude Ely. An ordained minister himself, Macel's professional experience is quite diverse. He presently serves as Training Specialist for the State of Tennessee's Institute for Public Service. Ely's job consists of facilitating training for Tennessee's governmental managers and executive leadership. Prior to coming to his current position, Macel served as Homeland Security Coordinator for the Center for Homeland Security Training. His duties included assisting in the development of a state-wide training for law enforcement and other city officials. Macel is a licensed private investigator and a member of the Tennessee Private Investigation Association. He serves as an adjunct professor and serves as a board of director for Barnabas Ministries International and the East Tennessee chapter of the American Society for Public Administrators. Macel has earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from Lee University and Kentucky Wesleyan College along with a Master's Degree in Public Administration and a Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies from the University of Tennessee. Before coming to work for the Institute for Public Service, Macel also worked as a school administrator in Kentucky and a news reporter on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. He and his wife, Jamie, reside in Maryville, Tennessee.

Review:

"It's sanctified singing like Ely's that we hear echoes of in Elvis and Little Richard, in James Brown and especially in Jerry Lee Lewis ... Most musicians were merely called by fame, by the Opry. Brother Claude Ely had been called by God." -- Dana Jennings, New York Times Editor

"Amazing hardcover book and CD package ... Authored by Brother Claude Ely's nephew, Macel Ely II, the bio is supplemented by 290 photos along with a CD featuring rare and electrifying recordings of Pentecostal worship services in the mountains of KY and VA accompanied by a fiery sermon by Brother Claude Ely." - Boomkat Product Review

"A wonderful new biography ... For anyone interested in the history of recorded music, this is an essential document ... Ely sang about religion with the fiery zeal that early rock & rollers applied ... Ain't No Grave rescues one of the classic country performers from undeserved obscurity." - New York Observer

"Doubles as an unofficial history of the Appalachian region and peoples. Beautifully produced... Johnny Cash would have loved it, Elvis Presley would have treasured it, and Ray Charles would have read it in Braille." -The Observer's Very Short List
