About the Author:
Monroe Katz brings an unusual background to Sparring with Rembrandt. He was born to a poor Jewish family in Brooklyn and came of age during the agonies of World War II. A troubled youth, Katz stuttered miserably and was constantly teased in the schoolyard; at home, he lived under the rule of a tyrannical aunt. But Katz had a special passion: Art. And as he matured, he found a secret friend and mentor: Rembrandt van Rijn.
Under Rembrandt's nurturing, Katz outgrew his childhood traumas and matured into a man of many callings: painting, sculpture, poetry, playwriting and just for good measure, the art of dentistry. He has achieved distinction in each of his fields. Chapters of Sparring with Rembrandt won first - place prizes in the prestigious Jessamyn West writing competition in Napa, California. One of his paintings, of a pensive young woman, won ""Best of Show" at the Napa Exposition and is central to this novel.
Katz received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and then received his dental degree from the University of Southern California. Though he remains a Brooklyn boy at heart, today Dr. Katz enjoys a satisfying dual existence in Napa, California, working as a dentist by day and following his artistic passions at night - living proof that with talent and hard work, you can have it all.
