9780981780245: The Gospel According to Frank

Merging elements of Frank Sinatra's public persona with Biblical and mythological representations of divinity, the poems in this collection weave a complex and engaging gospel narrating the life of an American icon. With wit and power, this sequence uses (and misuses) styles and forms from Greek mythology, the eighth-century Irish epic Tain Bo Cuailnge, the Welsh medieval tales of The Mabinogi, and the Old and New Testaments to construct a fresh portrait of The Chairman and the cosmos he still occupies.

About the Author:

David Lloyd was born in Utica, New York, and grew up in the Welsh community there. A graduate of St. Lawrence University, Lloyd received his MA in Creative Writing and his PhD in literature from Brown University. He now directs the Creative Writing Program at Le Moyne College. In 2000, he received the Poetry Society of America s Robert H. Winner Memorial Award. He is the editor of The Urgency of Identity: Contemporary English-language Poetry from Wales and the author of Writing on the Edge: Interviews with Writers and Editors of Wales. His poetry collection The Everyday Apocalypse, published by Three Conditions Press, won the 2002 Maryland State Poetry & Literary Societys chapbook contest. His fiction collection, Boys: Stories and a Novella, was published by Syracuse University Press in 2004, and his anthology Other Land: Contemporary Poems on Wales and Welsh-American Experience appeared from Parthian Books in 2008. He lives in Manlius, New York, with his wife, artist Kim Waale, and their daughter.

Review:

The figure of Frank Sinatra is a myth that draws other myths to it. David Lloyd has capitalized upon this fact and found analogies from ancient legend that help to visualize the glamor that surrounds the man. Employing parable, proverb, psalm, and tall tale, The Gospel According to Frank places the singer in a more universal context than even Sinatra might have imagined. Daring, enjoyable, wryly ironic. --FRED CHAPPELL, winner of the Bollingen Prize and former poet laureate of North Carolina

Lloyd s deft coupling of the Hollywood biopic and the traditional epic, of Louella Parsons and Cuchulain, of Marilyn Monroe and the Belle of Amherst, of the profane and the sacred, captures in a wonderfully trenchant but affecting way those aspects of the man/meaning dichotomy that informed my work . . . and the work of many other Sinatra scholars and creative artists ever since. --from the foreword by GILBERT GIGLIOTTI

The net effect is a grand tale in which the reader enters and gets to walk around with the man himself. You will remember the movie critic on Saturday Night Live always gushing, I laughed! I cried! It became a part of me! It s better than Cats! Lloyds skill with the tools of language, myth, and biography in The Gospel According to Frank have resulted in one of the most potent powers of poetry: It doesnt become a part of you--you become a part of it. --MAIN STREET RAG review
