World War II left many legacies, few more precious - or more elusive - than the countless tales lodges in the memories of its survivors. Memory can be fickle, but in this volume, Meg Heckman and Mike Pride have painstakingly harvested some of the richest remembrances of New Hampshirites who fought and witnessed the war. Some are anguished, some are bemused, many are surprising, all are poignant. Thanks to this collection, none will be lost to future generations who seek to understand the human face of history's most stupendous conflict.
--David M. Kennedy, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian
We Went to War brings the largest conflict in global history to an intimate human scale. It is indispensable reading for anyone interested in World War II history. Present and future generations owe Meg Heckman and Mike Pride a huge debt of gratitude for capturing these remarkable stories. --Mark Foynes, Executive Director, Wright Museum of WWII History
What a wonderful, moving collection of memories and stories - the basic DNA of the greatest cataclysm in history. This is the war undistracted, unmediated by the sentimental. This is the real stuff.
