Have you been especially troubled by your relationship with a parent? Have you struggled to understand the difficulties in that relationship? Despite your efforts, has this relationship failed to improve? It may be that your parent has a personality disorder.

Personality disorders are long-standing in nature, undergo little change, and end up hurting others, particularly family members. This damage may occur through a self-centered approach to life as well impulsive or poor decisions (such as addictions, problematic spending, and selecting poor relationship partners). People with personality disorders also harm through their inability to be honest (factually and emotionally), as well as their emotional or physical over-reactions to situations.

In this book, you will begin to understand the nature of a personality disorder and how it applies to your parent. After laying out the essential features of personality disordered parents, the authors describe two in-depth cases. Each case illustrates one of two personality disorder styles that appear to be relatively common: the intrusive personality style and the distant-hostile personality style.

The authors offer a number of practical tactics for transcending, psychologically and spiritually, the problematic past of having been raised by a parent with a personality disorder. This book is designed to offer supportive guidance in the process of resolving toxic parent-child relationships. It's a must-read for everyone trying to understand and resolve the devastating difficulties in their relationships with their parents. Are you ready to embrace your path?

Review:

"This valuable book makes the point that if you had a parent who was immature and self-serving, or deficient and harmful through any form of 'personality disorder,' you have a choice: to see this as an obstacle (and risk getting stuck) or see it as an opportunity (and start to grow). It gives you the chance to transcend victimhood and use your painful experiences as fuel for a kind of pilgrimage of personal and spiritual development.  I recommend it."
Larry Culliford, author of Love, Healing & Happiness (2007) and The Psychology of Spirituality: An Introduction (2011).

"What are you to think if your parents act like monsters with you but are liked and respected outside of the home; act like you should be taking care of them but undermine you if you try; or seem to see you a burden yet won't let you go?  Here at last is a book that describes in clear terms what severe personality disorders are, and suggests helpful ways for adult children to both change their reactions to and perceptions of such parents and to soothe themselves when overwhelmed."
David M. Allen, MD, author of How Dysfunctional Families Spur Mental Disorders (2010)

"This is not another book on parenting, but a book on de-parenting.  Sansone and Wiederman, avoiding jargon-infused terminology, assess the effects struggling parents have on their children, and how these adult children can better understand and cope with their disturbed mothers and fathers."
Jerold Kreisman, MD, author of I Hate You -- Don't Leave Me: Understanding the Borderline Personality (2010) and Sometimes I Act Crazy: Living with Borderline Personality Disorder (2006)

"Some parents are psychologically unfit for the job and can damage their children. None more so than parents with personality difficulties. Full of valuable insight, this book will be helpful to those who grew up under such parenting to understand what happened and to break free. Well worth taking the time to read."
Stephen Joseph, PhD, author of What Doesn't Kill Us: The New Psychology of Posttraumatic Growth (2011)

". . . with an easy-to-read style that is engaging, using humor and irony sensitively but effectively to drive home their main points. In their approach, [the authors] amply validate the suffering caused by disordered parenting while emphasizing the survivor's realistic responsibility for and capability of building a better life. . . . All readers will find a warm and sympathetic yet imminently reasonable and practical approach to the painful legacies of childhood." From review in Innovations in Clinical Neuroscience
