Designing houses is what we do. We were trained to design houses. We do it every day, and we are good at it. It can be challenging, but it is always fun. We also know how to listen. We understand that this process energizes some potential homeowners; others are paralyzed by the process. Designing and building a house is not something you do every day. For most people, it is something you will do once or twice in a lifetime. We want to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible. Most of the houses in this book were designed to complement their natural surroundings while taking full advantage of every possible view and vista. We plan around an old moss-laced live oak tree because it adds to the beauty and grace of your home. We make the windows larger facing the marsh, knowing that when the occasional shrimp boat passes in the distance you'll want to enjoy the moment as long as possible. The style and character of Lowcountry traditions and principles of classical architecture have influenced the designs of most of these homes. Any house in this collection, however, can be easily modified for any climate or locale - anywhere in the country. Although the exteriors clearly speak of the past, we have designed there floor plans for the way families live today. Our houses encourage residents to embrace the neighborhood outside their front door. Houses are usually slightly elevated and drawn up close to the sidewalk, so you can talk to your neighbors as they pass by.
