Ursula s Prism is based on the true story of Ursula Swartz and five other childrenwho escaped from Bergen-Belsen and crossed war-torn Germany on foot to freedom. Ursula shares the secrets of the prism with the other children and the power of there imagination gives them the strength to survive. Running, hiding and stealing, day after day was all the children knew since escaping from the concentration camp known as Bergen-Belsen. They found that life ouside the camp was just as brutal as inside. Six year-old Ursula, her older brother and four other children were smuggled out of the camp by a brave soldier in the bottom of his truck. Handing them a few provisions, the soldier dropped off the children in the forest, leaving them to fend for themselves. Ursula s Prism is a story of heroism, courage and honor as this group of six children fight to survive in a war-torn Germany, showing the resiliency and strength of the human spirit when faced with seemingly impossible circumstances

Growing up and living with a Holocaust survivor is a humbling experience. I had the desire to write my mother s story when I was in my early twenties, but she was not receptive at that time. Then one day, decades later, she was talking to a man who told her that he didn t think the Holocaust ever happened. She was angered, and she cried, and now out of that saddening confrontation, an incredible story has emerged. The author lives in Pennsylvania and is employed at a local area hospital as a Medical Lab Technician. Ursula s Prism is her first book.
Anger, grief, incredulity and Horror are just a few of the emotions engendered by Anna Block s Ursula s Prism. Her portrayal of a near-perfect childhood that devolves into a life wrought with daily atrocities is painful to read, or imagine. Yet, we owe Ms. Block our sincere gratitude, for introducing young Ursula Schwartz to the world, and for adding to America s historical narrative. Ursula s Prism confirms the resilience of humanity, while warning of man s propensity for inhumanity. ---Janis F. Kearney, former Personal Diarist to President William J. Clinton.
When cruelty enters so early into your life, it can destroy your world. Ursula s Prism: The Holocaust through a Child s Eyes...A survivor s Story is a guide of struggling to survive in the concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen. Author Anna Block bases her work on a true story of survival, of a young girl against all odds trying to succeed in a world that couldn t care if she lives or dies. Ursula s Prism is a riveting work of fiction, highly recommended. --Midwest Book Review Sept. 2011
Ursula's Prism is so much more than a daughter's homage to her mother. It is the story of young children -- her mother and her siblings among them -- who escaped from Bergen-Belsen and made their way across Germany attempting to escape to freedom. Written from the perspective of young children, it does not presume to know what they could not know but takes the reader through their journey, one struggle at a time, danger by danger, adventure by adventure. It offers a tale of cunning, bravery and survival, but the happy ending we so often crave because the reality of the Holocaust was that so many more were murdered or perished than the few who survived. Nevertheless, we should cherish the story of survival of the few and admire the bravery born of desperation. --Michael Berenbaum, Professor of Jewish Studies
