The kayak fishing community might just be the fastest growing segment of the sport fishing world, and few are more plugged into this community than Jon Shein. Kayak Fishing is undoubtedly the most thorough treatment of this topic ever created, and is a must-read for anyone with so much as a passing interest in the sport. Shein pulls from years of involvement in the kayak fishing industry, and a perspective that can only be achieved after countless hours on the water. This book s ample technical detail is interspersed with plenty of first-hand storytelling, and Shein s colloquial writing style makes it a refreshing read. Soon, our bays, rivers, ponds and oceans will be full of kayak anglers, and this book will have had much to do with that.

Jon Shein is a lifelong fisherman having started fishing at the age of 5. He started fishing from a kayak in the late 90s. He s worn most hats one can wear in the sport. He recognized the potential of kayak fishing and started sharing the sport by moderating a number of online forums. At the time there weren t any retail establishments catering to kayak fisherman so I started one which grew into the largest business of its kind. He personally outfitted hundreds of kayaks and supervised thousands. He sold kayaks and accessories for fishing and shipped them all over the world. During this time industry representatives and company owners recognized there was a robust market for kayak fishing specific products and consulted with him regarding how to improve their products to better serve the kayak fishing consumer. He sold that business in January of 2007. As a result of his efforts the industry began creating more and better offerings in both kayaks and accessories. He s fished from over 55 different models and caught over 75 species of fish. He s done so in fresh and salt waters from Alaska to Baja, the Caribbean to New England. He s worn many hats in the sport.Review:
I received my copy just in time for my long awaited trip to Florida. So I couldn't wait to board the plane and start reading. As with all books, I first just quickly glanced through the pages to see if anything catches my eye and to look at the pictures. Well this book has plenty of both. I started reading Jon's intro and chapter 1 (My Story) and I couldn't put the book down. For the next 2 weeks after fishing and with any available spare time I would pick up Kayak Fishing and start reading, sometimes going back and re reading the chapters. I found the book extremely informative and educational. I have read just about every kayak fishing related book on the market and have seen several videos. This is the only book I have gone back to for reference time and time again. Whether you are a beginner or advanced kayak fisherman, this book offers something new for everyone. A highly recommended read with no hidden agenda by the author. --Dino, Native Watercraft Endorsed Guide
Fantastic job! I got my copy of your book yesterday, and you really outdid yourself. The quality of the writing, the layout and the photos is a cut above. It is an honor to have Hobie represented in this fine work. Thanks so much, Jon, and I know the book is going to be a huge success. --Ruth Triglia, VP Sales, Hobiecat
Simply put, the best kayak fishing book on the market. Jon provides detailed instruction on choosing a kayak, accessories, gear, and electronics but also provides input on how to fish from a kayak in both fresh and saltwater environments. For a beginner, it is like having a personal fishing guide at your side. For experienced anglers it is like having a fishing partner. Other areas of insight include evolving areas of the sport like international travel, tournaments, and exotic species. A must for every coffee table and tackle bag! --Dino, The Pond Hopper Kayak Fishing Guide

After Jon Shein's appearance as guest speaker for the HRFA, I had to get his book. I spent a good amount of time talking to and asking Jon about my situation and the right kayak for me. Of course this was a week after I bought a kayak and realized I got the wrong kayak for my needs. Luckily the manager at Dick's let me return it and get the right kayak. Jon's book is the most comprehensive book on the subject and should be standard reading to all sales personnel who sell kayaks. It's a wealth of information for the seasoned kayaker as well for the novice. Jon is totally unbiased and doesn't mention or favor any particular maker. It's all about the different styles of kayaks and their possibilities, accessories and modifications that you can do to tailor it to ones need. This book is a must and will save you a lot of money if you read it BEFORE you go out and buy. --John L, NJ HRFA member
