Dragonfly Denny, by Denise Rowe, is a story about dreams and destiny, inner healing and hope, courage and risk. Exquisitely illustrated by Violet Freeland in pen and ink and watercolor from cover to cover, it is truly a tale for all ages. The symbolism woven in the story captures the adult mind in ways that only a parable can. At the same time, the playfulness of its rhyme and the beauty of its illustrations have held the attention of three and four-year-olds. Whether being used as part of a classroom poetry curriculum, a dramatized presentation encouraging the arts at a dance studio, a creative finale for an ashes to beauty theme at a women s retreat, or a metaphoric method to facilitate healing in the counseling context; Dragonfly Denny s multi-generational message of hope has touched a wide audience. Its universal theme and cross-cultural appeal has made it an inspiration for people in such diverse settings as Ireland, Russia and Jamaica.

Denise Rowe, a lifelong lover of the arts, first began to apply her pen to creative writing in the early 90's as she was simultaneously learning the power of symbolism. Through the discovery of metaphor, a whole library of images opened up for her and became a powerful therapeutic tool for her to utilize in her work with inner healing. Learning to paint word pictures which combine the playfulness and simplicity of child-likeness gave her a way of reaching the vulnerable places of the heart with healing imagery. The theme of Denise's writing centers on inspiring people to become who they were meant to be, while addressing those things which interfere like shame, grief, fear and abuse. Currently in private practice as a licensed mental health practitioner, Denise has also taught at the college level in the area of social psychology and has led workshops on variety of topics.Review:
Since infancy or early childhood, at one time or another, and possibly even more than once, each one of us have forgotten to remember the innate intuitiveness of who we are and to Whom we belong. Dragonfly Denny flies into our lives to remind us that what once was lost is now found again! There are those who see the life of my son, with special needs, as a tragedy or loss. In the face of it all, he dances throughout his life, heeding the voice of his King. He has always been well aware that he is the Designer's Original, from whom all love and blessings flow. Reading Dragonfly Denny with Jonathan amuses us and captivates our souls beyond The River's Edge. It pleases us to know that others, will, once again, hear and remember the voice of The King, alive in their hearts! And, we remember that there is never an end to a story. Rather, a new unfolding...a fresh beginning. As for Dragonfly Denny, we bow our heads and say, Amen! --Carolyn, mother of a special needs child
Dragonfly Denny... is beautiful. How full the metaphor is, it needs re- and re- reading....Life can indeed be larger than our largest dreams. As a Clinical Social Worker and Family therapist for over 40 years, I have found something in this book that I can share with others to help them create a vision for their own dreams. It casts a vision for creating a life that dares to look beyond convention and believe that there can be more! I have been touched by it, and use it in my practice to help others see beyond where they are as possible. --Ralph W. Eckardt, DSW, ACSW Marriage, Family and Individual Therapist, Pennsylvania
Dragonfly Denny is an adventure unlocked from within the heart of one who would dare to dream. It is playful, insightful, and speaks to the fragile childlike hopes that are often unrequited. I found myself exploring the application of the metaphors to my own untapped aspirations and rediscovered some hushed dreams. The vibrant interpretations captured the brilliance and energy of youth while weaving in a softness and elegance, attesting to what love and encouragement can produce over time. The inheritance from the king and his protection provide a beautiful license to claim destiny, dare to challenge capabilities, and the climate to stir embers of belief and courage. Denny's tale of strength, endurance, patience, and faith, demonstrates the power hidden within a fragile and delicate frame of a multi-faceted female creation. Within these pages, I recognized the purpose of both strength and vulnerability in her character as just that, character; and the spreading of her wings, the reach toward destiny. Thank you for this wonderful reflection of the complexities of life and the human spirit laced with hope and joy. I look forward to sharing this story as a tool to ignite the imaginations of the women and girls in my life who need a glimpse into their own hearts. --Kelly Cassidy Longale, J.D. Attorney at Law AZ
