American personalities are a dime a dozen. Becoming a legend takes much more. Vernon J. Pick made the jump with his serendipitous prospecting discovery of yellowcake in the southern Utah desert, gaining infamy as The Uranium King of America in 1954. The story of his discovery was told and retold at that time in the likes of Time and Fortune magazines, but only now has the depth of his persona and his discovery s influence on the future of American minerals exploration been made clear through the literary meanderings of his erstwhile protégé, Jack M. Langton.

First casting a spotlight on the genesis of his own career, Langton recounts his days and adventures with Pick in the Arctic tundra, building a personal view of the man and his extraordinary vision. Descriptions of Pick s magnificently wrought retreats at Walden West in California and Walden North in British Columbia are interwoven with the dealings and antics of Pick and Langton in their quest for minerals and riches . . . tales sprinkled with privileged authenticity that only genuine friendship can achieve.

From this vantage point he paints a vivid picture of the behind-the-scenes intrigue associated with Nelson Bunker Hunt s famous attempt to corner the world silver market, the demise of The Superior Oil Company, and the caste-like world of the Phelps-Dodge Corporation. Not since Upton Sinclair has such a stunning portrait been painted of the inner workings of an entire segment of American industrial society.

A bit brash and not without guile, The Prospector and His Protégé is in the end the personal story of a man both guided by the spirit of a legend and haunted by the personal destruction that unfulfilled striving for equal celebrity can bring . . . a chronicle of the Prospector and his Protégé.

G.A. Mac McLean, Ph.D.

About the Author:

Jackson M. Langton was born November 21, 1939 in Corpus Christi, Texas while his parents were traveling from Laredo to Houston. In 1945 his parents finally settled in Dallas, Texas where he graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1957. Jack was schooled in the art of hunting and fishing by a Louisiana Cajun friend from the time he was 11 years old until he reached the age of 15 years.

He first attended Colorado School of Mines and later achieved a Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering and a Master of Science in Geology at Oklahoma University by 1963. From 1963 to 1966, he was conducting research toward a Ph.D. in Geology at Missouri School of Mines and finally at Stanford University while consulting for Pick Enterprises.

Between 1966 and 1976 he was a Geologist and then Chief Geologist for the Morenci Branch of Phelps Dodge Corp. at their giant open pit copper mine in Arizona. In 1976 he moved to Tucson, Arizona to manage the domestic and international hard rock mineral exploration and mining interests of The Superior Oil Co. until September, 1981. He was promoted to Vice President and subsequently President of Superior Mining Co. and moved to Houston until October 1982. He returned to Tucson and continued his status until January 31, 1984, when Superior and Mobil Oil were negotiating a Mobil purchase of Superior.

From 1984 through 1986 he was a consultant to companies conducting mineral exploration and mining projects.

By 1991, he had moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where he currently resides. He has published a few technical earth science-related articles in years past and this book is his first free-lance publication. He is divorced and has one daughter, Brooke Langton, who lives in Hollywood, California.
