In the 1920s, a wooden railroad was built in the Coast Range mountains of Oregon to transport lumber and logs to market. This fictional story tells the community’s story of its efforts to become early entrepreneurs as they create a transportation system to bring their product—lumber—to market. Railroad workers begin receiving shares of stock in lieu of wages; their confidence remains unshaken. But, rumors force desperate measures by those who know secrets. Amidst the growing economic uncertainty of 1929, a railroad built on wooden rails holds the promise of wealth for a whole community. The completion of the last half-mile of track, however, will change them all.

About the Author:

David Hascall has lived in the Pacific Northwest all of his life, and grew up in an area similar to the town described in this book—albeit a few years later than when the story takes place. David has been a registered nurse and health educator for 40 years and a Certified Diabetes Educator for 15 of those years. While employed at Sacred Heart Hospital, he was the first nurse to perform hemodialysis treatments on patients with chronic kidney disease in Eugene, Oregon in 1975. He holds two masters degrees and currently works for Agate Health Care in Eugene. His early jobs included working in the fields of bean growers near Eugene, and he holds a self-proclaimed record of the most pole beans picked by hand in a single day: 653 pounds. He lives with his wife Barbara in Eugene, Oregon, and his two children are now grown and on their own. David can often be found at Eugene’s Saturday Market helping in his wife’s soap, lotion and body care products booth. His hobbies include cycling, Oregon football, fishing, travel, woodworking and cooking for friends. This is his first book.
