Nothing could ever compare to the pain and worry a mother experiences when her child becomes desperately ill. Giving up cannot be an option even when all the dreams a mother has for her child shatter and fall apart. Randy and Emily must learn together that beauty exists in every form and they would both need to embrace whatever life handed them. Mermaid Out of Water is a true documentation that hope is always within reach, even when circumstances seem to prove otherwise. Patience is the hardest to acquire, but if you can wait, you will find it.

Review:

This is a beautifully written and poignant account of one family s struggle and growth through some very challenging times. Randy s story, sometimes painful but always uplifting, offers hope and inspiration for us all. It is indeed a smooth gem made out of glass. --Congresswoman Lois Capps

Randy's story is a deeply moving and beautifully written portrait of what a mother's perseverance can accomplish for her child. I truly loved reading her story and it brought back my own memories of this heartbreaking experience which has an ultimately inspiring resolution. --Holli Goldstein

Mermaid Out of Water is an engaging true grit account of a mother's steadfast navigation through what seemed like an endless expanse of troubled waters. With determination and love, life renewed itself for Emily and her mother. Gathered from her journey, my friend Randy rises from her darkest moments to share her story and provide guidelines from her experiences bestowing on the reader a sincere gift and a riveting read. Take a deep breath and begin a journey where you won't come up for air until it's over. --Ilyce Dawes

Randy Gross Mermaid Out of Water touched me deeply. Randy tells the story of her daughter becoming paralyzed from the waist down, and of her own journey through this heartbreaking tragedy, with simplicity and compassion. Out of a time of pain and sadness, this mother has produced a book full of wisdom, of tenderness, and even humor. I recommend this book both for its very practical suggestions for individuals encountering suffering, and also for its wonderful humanity. In Gross book, we meet a family of human beings....a daughter, a mother, a father, siblings and friends....facing the greatest challenge of their lives. --Rabbi Stephen E. Cohen, Congregation B'nai B'rith

As a mother that has raised 3 boys, 2 that are technically handicapped, I am so personally grateful that Randy has shared her personal journey with all of us. I m so impressed with her ability to share in such detail her emotional rollercoaster that many parents face on a day to day basis when dealing with children that require so much physically and emotionally. Many times when children have physical or mental disabilities, the focus generally go towards the one that is suffering from the illness. As parents we love our children so much and need to be strong for them and yet, we suffer so much internally, as well. Randy has become such a dear friend to me over the last two years. Yet it is so strange that because of what I had endured with my own 2 children, I never spoke of it to her in detail and never pried into her own personal life regarding her struggles. Why would I? I had no desire to burden her with my own stories. I had my own and I knew she had hers and I let it be. I know now after reading her book that we all handle life s tragedies and hardships differently. I wish I handled mine as she had hers. I grew to love Randy as a person outside of her own pain never really knowing what it s been like for her. After reading her book, a tidal pool of emotion came forth from me because I do care so much for her and it hurt to know that she was in such pain, but also because I had stuffed down my own personal pain regarding my own children and I had not ever really faced it. Until now. Randy has allowed me to view and respect my own feelings of what it is really like as a parent that has to watch a child suffer through pain and hardships, whether physical or emotional, while making sure that everyone else in the family s needs are met. I will forever be grateful that Randy has written down her journey as it has taught me to be more open and share because really, we do all need each other to lean on and learn from. I encourage everyone I know to read her story. --Tracy Griffin

The other morning I sat quietly in the woods near my house and read Mermaid Out of Water from cover to cover. The woods turned out to be the perfect place to read this deeply thoughtful book, under the oaks, absent of traffic noise, and cell phones, and half-time shows, and war zones. A place where there were no human sounds at all, except for the full and tender murmur of Randy Gross heart. For it is her heart, which expanded with each crisis she encountered when others would have hardened that gives every page its life, and, ultimately, her book its meaning. Mermaid Out of Water is that rare and generous work meant not so much to be read as to be experienced. And the wonder is that the experience defies the sorrow of Randy and Emily s unrelenting hardships even as we cry for them. Inexplicably, some kind of courage is bestowed on us instead, and we exult in their uncompromising trust in each other; a trust that certainly came with them at birth, for no man could conjure such a thing. Therein lies the great lesson, I suppose. Mermaid Out of Water is neither a book of miracles nor a tale of super-human skill. It wisely does not pretend to teach us, preferring instead to offer this solemn promise and gentle caution: We are all born with a faith so strong that, if we call on it, nothing we face, nothing, can irretrievably darken our hearts or destroy our souls. But we must call on it. And that is not easy, especially when we are scared. I walked back to the house thanking God for my three healthy children, wondering how well I would cope if the day ever came when I had to face what this mother and daughter faced, and if I had what it takes to call upon my faith rather than operate out of anger and fear. I pray that day never comes, of course, but if it does, I will have Mermaid Out of Water at my side, and I will borrow Randy Gross faith until I find my own. --Peter Dunne, Emmy and Peabody Award-winning Producer and Writer
