Sniper. The word conjures images in our imaginations. Soldier, lone combatant, silent killer - unmentioned by his commanding officers, an invaluable resource to field intelligence, an enigma to his comrades in arms and a curse to his enemies. The advanced intelligence and demoralizing effect provided by the scout-sniper is often the key to military victory. In his own words, Sgt Cannady explains the process of becoming a member of an elite fraternity; both what is gained in the achievement and what is lost. The demons, both real and unreal, that the few men of this unspoken profession face. It is a brief look into a raw and brutal side of war unseen by the average soldier from the view point of a combatant both revered and hated. From the training regiment, to special operations in Honduras, to the sands of Desert Storm, a sniper describes not only the skills and mind set required to perform and succeed as a warrior whose engagement with the enemy is as personal as it is deadly, but also the harsh reality of coping with life after stalking the world's most dangerous animal - man.

From the Author:

I spent five years as a Marine reconnaissance sniper and three years in the Army Special Forces. During my years in special operations, I found hidden in the walls of America things that no one should know -- or should want to know. I will talk about some of these personal experiences, as well as some of my colleagues. Although some of these missions are still classified, I will change some content and names to protect both confidentiality and myself.  The events of which I write are horrific in nature, yet happen  every day around the world. There is no media coverage of  these events, no family members are aware of them, and  most of all, they are never spoken of except among the few who participate in them.

From the Inside Flap:

Many recognize the iconic relic that graces the cover of this book -- the Spear of Destiny, the lance head used by a Roman Centurion named Longinus to pierce the side of Christ as he hung on the cross. The Crusaders were said to have carried it on a standard at the head of their army. Attila the Hun was rumored to have attained the lance as he cut his way across Europe. Stories of the power of the Holy Lance span centuries, and over the years, men of great power have been associated with it.

Successful military leaders, including Theodosius, Alaric, Charles Martel, Charlemagne, and Frederick Barbarossa were all alleged to have held the lance. According to legend, Charlemagne carried the lance through 47 battles, but died when he accidently dropped it.  Barbarossa died only a few minutes after the lance slipped out of his hands while crossing a stream. Napoleon believed the legend and attempted to gain control of the lance after the battle of Austerlitz, but it had been smuggled out of Vienna prior to the battle. He never attained it. Hitler took possession of the lance from the Hofburg Museum after declaring Austria part of the Third Reich.

The lance and its legend came to be associated with power -- specifically, the power of the spear's possessor to rule the world. Oddly, none who held the spear attained the ultimate power and domination that they sought. Only Longinus, the lance's first owner, ever attained anything of ultimate value from association with the Holy Lance.  Longinus, the Roman Centurion assigned to preside over Christ's crucifixion, was nearly blind. His failing eyesight might have been reason for his assignment to the duties of executions, since he would not have been seen fit for regular military service. Upon piercing Christ's side, blood from the wound splashed into Longinus' eyes and his sight was fully restored. Longinus remarked, "Indeed, this was the Son of God!" [Mark 15:39]. He left the military and converted. He went on to become Saint Longinus.

Perhaps only a soldier can know true peace, for all he has known is war. As I mentioned previously, those that sought power in possessing the Holy Lance never achieved it. For Longinus, an instrument of war became the key to salvation. The realization and acceptance of God helps put war's horrors in perspective and allows the soldier the peace he has fought so hard for. Our faith and God's forgiveness offers us the same salvation received by Longinus. Consider the lance in any manner you wish. For me, I prefer Longinus' view.
