In No Place For Naked Dowsers, many characters from award winning Corrigans' Pool (ForeWord Review's 2011 BOOK OF THE YEAR - historical romance category) find themselves far removed from the genteel plantation lives they had lived before war and an end to slave labor took it all away . . .
Even after Civil War decimated Ella Corrigan's revered Georgia plantation, and post-war efforts to revitalize it met with one setback after another, she never dreamed that her new husband, Gentry Garland, would want to leave it all behind and take her and their son to his wild Texas ranch lands. She refuses to go, but Gentry does something that will give her no choice--something that, overnight, turns her love for him into a bitter obsession for revenge.
Ella finds Texas in the midst of a killer drought and filled with strange characters that either terrify or revolt her. Among them are the old ex Texas Ranger, foul-mouthed, irreverent, and professed woman hater, Hempstead Grouse; twelve year-old Molly Barton, a victim of incest and ignorance; young Dan Meaney, who would have looked like an innocent schoolboy to Ella upon their first meeting ... if the two 44 colts on his thin hips hadn't contradicted every charitable thought she tried to have of the boy. In Texas, Ella sees her and Gentry's old nemesis, Timon Pledger, in a way she'd never dreamed she'd ever see him or any other man, for that matter--naked as a jaybird beneath the burning Texas sun, and with a dowser stick clamped to his exposed groin.
In constant longing for her family's ancestral plantation home back in Georgia, Ella devises a plan to return there someday and reclaim her property ... but it will take time and money to do so. The wedge between her and Gentry thickens ... threatening the love that both had thought would last forever.
Will Gentry's vast herds of Longhorn cattle be the answer to his money problems or will his need to save his land drive him to a danger that will force Ella to a decision that could have disastrous consequences for them both ...

From the Author:

Dear Reader,
In 2011, Corrigan's Pool , the forerunner to No Place For Naked Dowsers, was favorably met by readers and reviewers alike, and was named BOOK OF THE YEAR by prestigious ForeWord Reviews' Magazine (Historical Romance category).
As its author, I was surprised and greatly flattered when readers requested I write a sequel. I was told by one person in the writing business that Corrigans' Pool would be a hard book to follow, in that it was an award winner; I believe that to be a true statement.
However, I hope you enjoy No Place For Naked Dowsers--if not as much as Corrigans' Pool, then even more.
Note to new readers: I wrote No Place For Naked Dowers as a stand-alone novel, so it isn't necessary to read Corrigans' Pool first, but you might enjoy doing so.
I would love to hear from all readers, new and previous. Go to dotryanbooks.com and click on Contact.
Warm wishes,
Dot Ryan

From the Inside Flap:

ELLA CORRIGAN'S REFUSAL, in the aftermath of civil war, to accept the hopelessness of her efforts to restore Greenpoole Plantation to its old splendor, drives her angry husband, Gentry Garland, to a desperate measure which, in turn, forces her to a journey that will change her life forever . . .

Ella wiped her sweaty cheek with the back of her hand, her tired eyes focusing on the rickety-looking boat moving toward the dock, the anxious bawl of its four-legged passengers getting louder and louder, the smell of their droppings getting stronger and stronger.
Ella silently dismissed the option of boarding the cattle boat--she was sick enough already. She turned to the man. "Sir, have you heard of a town called Victoria?"
"Sure have, ma'am. It sits just north of Port of Lavaca and alongside the Guadalupe River." He smiled suddenly. "Is Victoria where you're heading?" Without giving her a chance to reply, he grinned as if quite pleased. "Well then, be glad you missed the Mary. Port of Lavaca's a lot closer to Victoria than Indianola ... about thirty or forty miles closer, I'd say. Too bad the railroads were mangled during the war... or wouldn't be far at all by rail."
She refocused on the approaching boat, realizing that it actually was her only option if she didn't want to spend days waiting for another vessel. She gave out a forlorn sigh. Am I to get this far only to end up sinking in the Gulf of Mexico amid a sea of floating cow patties?
The man continued, "Just as soon as the deck's sloshed clean, them folks yonder are boarding, and maybe a dozen or so others." He pointed at a shabby, hard-faced elderly woman who was grimacing while ferociously scratching her armpit. A man, who looked nearly as old and disgruntled as the woman, slouched next to her. A few feet away from the pair, two small boys and three ragged little girls huddled silently together in a tight cluster. The eldest of the girls looked no more than twelve.
Ella stared at the twelve-year-old, abruptly stunned by what she saw. Though hunched deeply into a tattered, over-sized, man's coat, the stark protrusion of the solemn-faced girl's belly left no doubt that she was heavy with child. As Ella gaped, the girl's sullen eyes met hers and then abruptly widened into a look of helplessness that brought a lump to Ella's throat. There was a time in distant memory when she would have quickly turned away from this hapless girl of obvious low station, but now, without knowing why, she allowed the slight beginning of a smile to erase her look of dismay. The girl's mouth appeared to struggle with a timid grin, the attempt quickly squelched by the clench-jawed man's rough poke to her shoulder. Then the lot of them moved off down the dock. Ella watched them, puzzled by her concern for this scruffy girl. Oddly, it was as if, in that transient moment of awareness between them, they had formed a bond.
She abandoned the thought, feeling quite foolish, and thinking it was this insufferable heat that had her so mush-headed. She dragged a soggy handkerchief from her sleeve and mopped her brow. The only bond between that poor child and me is the size of our bellies ... and possibly our misery!
