From Beijing's hutongs to the "always undefeated" city of Warsaw, follow Josh along with author Dave Norman as they explore the Far East and Eastern Europe by rail. Whether drinking with nomads in Mongolia, dining with locals in Seoul, or exploring Russian paintball combat with a "retired" Soviet arms dealer, Norman's blend of humor and history makes the adventure come alive. At its core, "Following Josh" is the story of two friends reuniting on an epic adventure across Eurasia. After teaching abroad, Josh is homeward bound while Dave takes the long way from their hometown to a new start in New York City-different trajectories, even while traveling together. Trapped together in stuffy Russian rail cars and cheap hostels, they realize just how far apart they've grown...and what it takes to start anew-in friendship as well as in life. Excerpt from page 134: "...she embodies my image of a Mongol grandma: skin like oiled leather, glistening brown eyes that search through heaven and time and space, her hair a rainbow of silver, one shade for each of her two or three hundred years moving around the steppe." Dave Norman is the author of three other nonfiction books, including the history title "White River Junctions" and the industry-leading "501 Paintball Tips, Tricks, and Tactics." He lives and writes in Portland, Maine and Columbia, Illinois. www.davenorman.net

About the Author:

Dave Norman haunts the coffee shops of Portland, Maine, when not traveling for research. His penchants for writing, adventure, and getting away with things have served him well throughout a blossoming career. Recent adventures include a four month stint in India and Nepal investigating ashrams and rural gastronomy, and a solo trip by bicycle from Prague to Budapest to report on the EuroVelo cyclists' routes. A recognized expert on paintball, he has played the sport in seven countries and used it as an introduction to many more--as he does in "Following Josh" while taking a tour of the underground paintball scene in Moscow. His travel articles explore the dusty streets of rural India, frozen Russian gulags, maze-like Chinese hutongs, and hot Cuban nightclubs.

Dave has a special love for finding small stories that connect with big ideas, and writing about them for a range of publications. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College's MALS program in creative writing, and a 2004 graduate of Westminster College. His first paid article appeared in the Monroe County Clarion in 2001, and his career has been a full-blown adventure ever since.

His forthcoming title, "Leading Jake," is due out in the summer of 2012 from f/64 Publishing.

Review:

From Korea to Mongolia to Russia, and much more, Norman presents a riveting story of friendship and the call of adventure. "Following Josh" is a remarkable story of friendship and coming to appreciate it much more. --Midwest Review of Books

I enjoyed Following Josh, by Dave Norman. It's an interesting tale all on its own, full of anecdotes and history, and worth reading for any arm-chair train travelers stuck in one place for awhile. It also made me take time to reminisce about my own post-college travels, which made me like the book even more! -- MissReadsTooMuch for LibraryThing.com

I love reading travel memoirs and this one didn't disappoint. ... That vicariously living adage is definitely true with this book, given the length of the train trip, the perils and the interpersonal dramas of this book. I definitely look forward to Dave Norman's book Leading Jake. -- Bartsy123 for LibraryThing.com

I was surprised by the amount of history, culture, politics, economic, etc information that it covered. It forced me to dig deeper into historical events and places such as the Great Wall and Ghengus Khan, and I am happy that I did. -- Zeppelin25 for LibraryThing.com

what is refreshing about this book is how honestly Norman writes about the trials and tribulations of their travels. If you like travel books this one is a winner...with intersting info on many places in Eurasia and wonderful descriptions of both people and scenery. -- Barb302 for LibraryThing.com
