Myriads of negatives tell of the world, speaking among themselves, constituting a vast conversation, filling a photosphere that is located nowhere. But one single photo is enough to express the real that all photographers aspire one day to capture, without ever quite succeeding in doing so. Nevertheless, this real cohabits intimately with negatives, with clichés as embedded in our lives as they are imperceptible. Photographs are the thousand flat facets of an ungraspable identity that only shines - and sometimes very faintly - through something else. What more is there to a photo than a curious and prurient glance? And yet it is also a fascinating secret.

The Concept of Non-Photography develops a rigorous new thinking of the photograph in its relation to science, philosophy and art, and introduces the reader to all of the key concepts of Laruelle's 'non-philosophy'.

About the Author:

François Laruelle, professor emeritus at the University of Paris-Ouest (Nanterre), is the founder of non-philosophy and the author of around twenty works, including Une biographie de l homme ordinaire (Paris: Aubier, 1985), Principes de la non-philosophie (Paris: PUF, 1996), Le Christ futur. Une leçon d hérésie (Paris: Exils, 2002, and Philosophie non-standard (Paris: Kimé, 2010).

Review:

What excites Laruelle is that photography incarnates a decisionless move from original to copy. Hence, contrary to the whole modern history of photography theory that assumes a wholly specular relationship between photography and its referents, photography is, in itself, a fundamentally anti-specular mechanism. - John Roberts, Philosophy of Photography

Book Description Urbanomic Media Ltd, United Kingdom, 2011. Paperback. Condition: New. 2nd Revised edition. Language: French,English . Brand New Book. If philosophy has always understood its relation to the world according to the model of the instantaneous flash of a photographic shot, how can there be a philosophy of photography that is not viciously self-reflexive? Challenging the assumptions made by any theory of photography that leaves its own onto-photo-logical conditions uninterrogated, Laruelle thinks the photograph non-philosophically, so as to discover an essence of photography that precedes its historical, technological and aesthetic conditions. The Concept of Non-Photography develops a rigorous new thinking of the photograph in its relation to science, philosophy, and art, and introduces the reader to all of the key concepts of Laruelle s non-philosophy .
