Young Gilbert Evans is caught in the anti-communist hysteria of 1953 when he writes an essay for his English class calling for loyalty oaths. His teacher is so impressed he sends the essay to the local paper. The essay by a "concerned child" is printed and becomes a catalyst in the decision to require all teachers to sign loyalty oaths that are known to be a trap for future perjury accusations.
Gib fears that his favorite teacher and his Quaker parents will refuse to sign the oath and will lose their jobs. Local leaders use threatening tactics to force use of the oath. Gilbert struggles to understand the powerful manipulation of emotions that creates public fear. Together, Gilbert and friends work to undo the disaster he has helped create.
Panic about communism grows into hatred and rage.  Gilbert learns that turning off, or even deflecting mass hysteria has become nearly impossible, and very dangerous.

From the Back Cover:

You can join me as we explore fear and power, greed and human need in my short stories and novels, articles, interviews and essays. Using family relationships and the backdrop of historical events, I write to bring focus to the themes that drive our human race. My fiction is written for adults and young adults from the perspective of youth. The characters in these stories face a confusing world of hypocrisy and courageous honesty. The humor, friendships, and caring they bring to these situations help them forge new solutions to age-old problems.

About the Author:

Rae Richen's short stories and articles have appeared in anthologies, newspapers and in handbooks for writers and teachers. She has taught middle school, high school students and adults and has always been impressed with the wide-ranging curiosity and the persistent search for answers among her students.

Her novels include the adventure novel, Uncharted Territory, and the historical Scapegoat series, The Price of Freedom and The Hounded. She has also written To Serve Those Most in Need, a non-fiction history of social services in the Pacific Northwest.

Her novels include questions for book groups dealing with story content and also with style and storytelling choices. They are appropriate for interested readers and also for students studying fiction writing.

The author is available for classroom presentations and discussion. She enjoys leading workshops for any age group on the writing of fiction and non-fiction. Contact her at:
