Recorder Improvisation and Technique Book Three is for the student already confident playing both C and F recorders. These lessons focus in detail on how the Orff-Schulwerk Volumes' basic sequence can be successfully applied to recorder teaching and playing. Compositional forms are explored with improvised materials using major, modal, and minor scales as well as dominant and subdominant bass-lines, improvised melodies, ornamentation, paraphony, descants, and other enhancements. A final chapter expands on improvisation for movement, free solo improvisation, and various kinds of group improvisation.Built from a synthesis of Orff and Keetman's creative genius, the materials of Medieval, traditional and improvised music, and Carley's own integrative insights, the result is genuine and inspiring. That hallmark Orff-Schulwerk sound an amalgam of Indonesian, African, and pre-Classical European sources here mixes with North American traditions, Carley's original pieces, and each student's creativity, to form wholly original music.

Isabel McNeill Carley was a published composer, writer, editor and lifelong innovator and creative teacher of music. The first American Honors graduate of the Orff Institute in Salzburg, Austria, she was a founding member of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. She composed works for piano, instrumental and vocal ensembles, performed in chamber-music consorts, and taught music for over fifty years to children and adults.Carley's three-book Recorder Improvisation and Technique series is a classic, integrating recorder instruction with musicianship, improvisation and the Orff Approach. It is used successfully in Orff certification courses as well as classrooms. Review:
Your recorder books are excellent ... completely in the spirit of the Schulwerk. --Gunild Keetman, co-creator with Carl Orff of the Orff-Schulwerk
The third volume is...applicable to the musical development of any vocalist or instrumentalist...The focus is the emphasis on improvisation leading to composition in the forms that parallel the history of Western music. --Leslie Timmons, American Recorder Magazine
