NEW YORK CITY'S FORSAKEN STREETCARS - VOLUME 1

9780983941507: NEW YORK CITY'S FORSAKEN STREETCARS - VOLUME 1

Through the years, many books have been written about trolleys, rapid transit systems and railroads. Recognition for such accomplishments are duly noted and appreciated by all rail enthusiasts. It is attributed to the dedication of a small number of individuals that the vast library of books and knowledge are available for so many today. Most publications concentrate on particulars such as a transit system's history, routes, equipment, paint schemes, etc., all of which are captured by moments in time through text and photographs. We have decided to put together this book of photographs in dedication to the memory of those streetcars that served the streets of New York City for many years and are now only forsaken memories. For detailed histories of the street cars and lines there are books such as James C. Greller's "BROOKLYN TROLLEY CARS FROM THE BRT to THE B&QT" (EXPLORER PRESS) and many others. The intent of this book is to present as many photographs as possible of each and every type of streetcar. The photographs have been restored as best as possible. Most of the photographs in this book were printed from negatives taken by George Votava. The photographs of the "BMT (B&QT) TROLLEY FLEET OF 1930" chapter were taken by the BMT using 8x10 inch negatives. Some locations and dates of photographs presented in this book maybe unknown. The timeline starts in the mid nineteenth century when the Cities of New York and Brooklyn (later the Borough of Brooklyn) desperately needed a public transportation system, up through the 1930's. Many of the trolley lines originated as small companies comprising horse drawn omnibus, horse and cable car lines. Through time many of these companies were merged and ultimately became sole operators.
