Are you a Reluctant Metaphysician? A career change, an upsetting external event, a serious illness, a painful breakup, or an unravelling culture can all be invitations to enter a deeper world behind the world. You may not have chosen to go there, but you evolve thereby. This book weaves together stories and reflections to introduce teachings and practices from ancient wisdom traditions that illuminate our unique life path.
The Path of a Reluctant Metaphysician speaks to the importance of having a holistic spiritual philosophy in our current times of the "great unraveling" of our personal, political, economic, cultural, and ecological world. Here you will find an integral approach to finding your life stance in troubled times. The metaphysical path is an "all vector approach" that incorporates both "spiritual" and "soulful" pathways, traditions of postural initiation such as Tai Chi, mythology, depth psychology, bodymind healing methods, a non-deterministic approach to astrology, and a multi-dimensional approach to the political sphere.

When I look back at my journey as a Reluctant Metaphysician seems as though my life, along with others, has served as a dedication to the re-enchantment of the cosmos. Has some wider force than myself used my life as an example to show me, and others, how to re-sacralize the body, the world of dreams, human posture and movements, nature, and our relationship to the universe itself? It certainly seems as though some cosmic trickster picked the most unlikely person, ensconced in the world of rationality, to illustrate metaphysical lessons about the world behind the world. (Or, maybe not so unlikely of a choice, this Being wisely chose a person who could tell a good honest story and make a cogent argument for a good cause.) Regardless, this trickster deity abducted a person like me and filled my life with incredible, metaphysical, and synchronistic stories in order to say, "If it could happen to a sceptic like him, it could happen to you."
My latest book, The Path of a Reluctant Metaphysician, is one metaphysician's "coat of many colors" that is passed on to the reader to help you on your journey through the seasons of your life. My hope is that from listening to my story, you will learn how to weave your unique coat of many colors to pass on to posterity. Like biblical Joseph, each of us does not want to be sold into "the slavery of life" or suffer various wounds and betrayals due to the way of being in which we are cloaked, but from such experiences the fabric of each Reluctant Metaphysician's life is woven. In the book you will see how, as a Reluctant Metaphysician I've woven my integral "coat of many colors" from: mythology, psychology, the people I've met, the dreams/visions I've had, practicing and teaching Tai Chi, Qigong, and from exploring various cross-cultural spiritual traditions. But the book is not meant to focus upon my journey except as a means to help you, the reader, to discover how to weave your tapestry of metaphysical traditions to help you find your center (axis mundi) in troubled times.
Each soul's purpose is to take the joyful and painful stories of our lives, and from those experiences to weave a "coat of many colors" to pass on to our children or future generations, as biblical Joseph's father Jacob did. Each of us weaves together our unique quilt from the threads of various spiritual traditions we have explored (blue threads), the light hearted moments we have experienced (golden threads), the wounds we have suffered (red threads), the places in nature that have become our sanctuaries (green threads), the people we have met (uniquely colored threads), and from our dreams and visions (purple threads).
Michael Mayer is a reluctant metaphysician and storyteller who uses ancient sacred wisdom traditions to help people find a healing pathway through troubled times. Michael, "Deer Kissing Eyes," (following the medicine animal name that came to him through his forty night vision quest), helps individuals and groups to open to their inner vision and transform their lives thereby. As a Tai Chi and Qigong teacher, Michael uses traditions of postural initiation to facilitate a person's discovering self-healing abilities and to discover new life stances. As an astromythologist (who doesn't believe in predictive astrology), he won the astrology prize from the Astrological Association of Great Britain for the most valuable contribution to astrology in 1979. Dr. Michael Mayer is a psychologist in private practice, author of twenty publications, including five books and various peer-reviewed articles on bodymind healing. He teaches workshops on his integrative approach at professional conferences, universities, hospitals, and various workshop locations. He co-founded the Transpersonal Psychology Department at John F. Kennedy University where he trained therapists for twelve years; and he co-founded an integrative medical clinic where he specializes in giving his patients self-healing methods for physical and mental health problems. Dr. Mayer is a Fellow of the American Association of Integrative Medicine. Michael is inspired by special places in nature where he plays his flute, practices Tai Chi and Qigong, and develops rites of renewal for his community. reluctantmetaphysician.com.
