9780984009749: 21st Century Chinese Poetry, No.2: Bilingual Chinese-English

The quarterly journal of  21st Century Chinese Poetry was founded with the intention of introducing modern Chinese poetry to readers worldwide.
Modern Chinese poetry was born from the broader intellectual movement that took place in China in the early part of the 20th century, known as the May-Fourth Movement (1917-1921); for the first time in history, vernacular Chinese was accepted as a legitimate poetic voice. Since then, nearly a century has passed by and this poetic experiment hasn't stopped evolving but only accelerated recently because of the easy exchange of styles and ideas over cyberspace. This is an eye-opening, exciting and even confounding experience for both the poets and the readers.
The editor-and-translator team of  21st Century Chinese Poetry selects some of the best poems written in Chinese by today's poets from all geographical areas. This issue includes 26 poems by 11 poets:  Ren Xianqing, Song Huiyuan, Wa Dao, Wang Jiming, Li Zhuang, Liu Chengyu, Zhang Zhanyuan, Wang Qiang, Meng Ye, Liu Xuejun, and Meifu Wang.

The Home of an Old Comrade
by  Song Huiyuan

Plainer than your youth,
that was how those houses looked, and their interiors

were as empty as the soul of that era...
but the moon always lit up your bedroom floor,

or was it night frost?  Come to think of it, it's nothing
less than amazing that your father and forefathers

lived above the fray of the cities, compared to you,
a mere bush hermit. But this house

is part of the landscape now, and you belong to it.
On a day like today, if I pushed your door open like old times,

would you still take out
your girlfriend's black-and-white photo to share with me?

Total Eclipse of the Moon
by Wa Dao

I dug a hole for the moon, to bury it
so the sky would be calmer, darker, and deeper----
made for an elope or going astray.
A boat is hidden in the swaying reeds,
on board is the money I brought for you.
Wait for a cue
from a crow or the wind
and launch it into the rocking waves through the fog.

But don't tarry too long before you return, say two years,
in the spring when lives and greenery re-emerge.
You shall ride on a large vessel
and dock at the riverbank, next to the throngs of people.
There we may by chance meet again
like two crickets missing an old rivalry, touching
before re-engaging in three hundred rounds of wrestling,
that is to say if we don't just walk on by,
letting our eyes sparkle just to say goodbye.

Expecting a Snowflake to Fall
by Liu Chengyu

Since the beginning of winter, I've been waiting for a snowflake to fall.
I changed my vocabulary to one befitting the winter scene as soon as fall departed.
I painted faint light over misty mountains and drew thinning streams.
I also put on a coat ahead of time
to emphasize the hint of increasing chill and icy winds.

Anticipating the first snowflake, I watched the change in a single leaf;
when its tip showed fishtail wrinkles before even turning yellow,
I fancied that snowflakes would sail out
like a northern belle in a poem, wearing a white gown with flowing sleeves.
I dreamt that she would stay in my arms long past winter
and leave her footsteps in this sun-drenched valley.

Earlier tonight I painted a plum tree teeming with blossoms.
The snowflake I'm waiting for will know these delicate flowers are lanterns I lit for her.
