“William Evans debut book of poems In The Event You are Caught Behind Enemy Lines is an engaging examination of war. Evans writes in the persona of a prisoner of war; he gives voice to the staggering number of African American men behind bars and the families left coping with their absence; he gives a portrait of a Vietnam War veteran still haunted by atrocities in Asia. Together these poems express the idea that war is constant, takes many forms and continues long after an end is officially declared. This book boldly combines narratives about driving through discrimination laden towns and the joys of middle school crushes into a seamless moment. The moment before a war starts; the moment before a page turns; the moment before a reader is either caught behind enemy lines or made to unravel the haunting assertions and characters brought to life in this book.”
