Chi-Sung Hung, an internationally renowned Zen Master and meditation teacher from Taiwan, has devoted his life to promoting compassionate and enlightened living for all. Over the last 20 years, he has taught more than 60 advanced meditation techniques. He has developed the Miaoding Zen practice as an effective, straightforward way to help modern people to relax at any time. Master Hung calls himself an Earth Zen Person, someone who is devoted to promoting the enlightenment of all living beings. Facing life and death at a young age started him on his search for the path to immortality. As a boy, he witnessed a huge explosion at his father s firecracker factory and the death of workers there. Years later, his father s death further opened his eyes to life s impermanence. When he was ten, he started learning several different types of Buddhist meditation. Then, at seventeen, he was inspired by "The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch" by Hui Neng, a famous Zen master during the T'ang Dynasty (618-907 AD). He started teaching meditation when he was 20 and he has been devoted to the popularization of meditation education since then. Master Hung advocated a 1993 movement called Pure Land in this World, which emphasized environmental protection and mental purification. In 1995, he began teaching a series of advanced Buddhist meditation courses which lasted for eight years. Over sixty Vipassana meditation practices were covered in depth, including the fundamental meditation skills, Mahayana meditations, and the Samadhi of ultimate enlightenment. These teachings were later collected in his book, "The Heart of Buddhist Meditation." Master Hung is a best-selling prolific author, having written more than a hundred books on a wide range of subjects, with all of them focusing on the development and purification of the human body and spiritual well being. The original Chinese version of "The Sutra of My Heart" was a bestseller and is now available in English for a wider audience to gain enlightenment. Master Hung has taught meditation and stress management skills in Taiwan at various universities, organizations, and government offices. His Relaxation Zen and Sleep/Dream Zen were used as psychotherapy guidance material for traumatized rescue teams after the horrific and deadly earthquakes in Taiwan in 1999 and the 2008 Sichuan, China earthquake. In 2004, Master Hung was invited by the Massachusetts Buddhist Association, Harvard University and the Dayton Buddhist Association to teach meditation in the United States. The following year, he was invited to give lectures in Chinese and English by several organizations in 13 US cities, among them Harvard University and MIT. In 2006, he was invited to teach meditation by Ohio State University and he lead several 7-day and 10-day meditation retreats at various American Buddhist organizations, including the Temple of Enlightenment and Chuang Yen Monastery in New York. His special teaching of walking meditation has been very well received by the people who attended the retreats. In 2008, Master Hung led over a hundred attendees from all over the world on a 7-day retreat in Bodhgaya, India, where the Buddha found enlightenment. After the retreat, Master Hung s 16-foot long Buddha painting was hung at the gate of the Mahabodhi Temple. Master Hung has lead retreats and lectured at many organizations and universities in China, including Beijing's Tsinghua University and Shanghai's Fudan University. Master Hung's teaching unveils the methods of Buddhist meditation and provides the way to improve our bodies and minds, eventually helping us to attain enlightenment. Hung Chi-Sung is a self-taught artist and all the deeply profound illustrations in "The Heart of the Sutra" were created by him.Review:
