A devastating car accident upends, disrupts and derails a seemingly ordinary family. In the wake of devastation is where recovery and, ultimately, redemption are found. Shattered, Shaken and Stirred explores and embraces the process of brokenness and healing in a way that is honest, heartfelt, and yet at times reassuringly humorous. Gil Ahrens offers his own journey not so much as a prescription for adversity, but as a comforting guidepost for how we might cope when confronted with life-altering challenges...when what we thought was safe and secure is suddenly taken away. He reveals how God s love and grace appear not necessarily when we want them, but certainly when we need them. This book is a real-life example of the power of reconnecting with what matters most. It offers hope and encouragement to anyone feeling the strain of life s struggles.

About the Author:

Gil Ahrens is the author of Shattered, Shaken and Stirred: Reconnecting with What Matters Most After Loss and Advsersity. It is his account of the aftermath of a head-on collision with a drunk driver that left his wife paralyzed but their three week-old daughter miraculously unscathed. This is his first book. Gil Ahrens comes from families that played significant roles during dramatic turning points in the histories of the United States and Germany. From his father s side, he is a direct descendant of Israel Bissell, who has been credited with performing the real midnight ride in 1775 (while Paul Revere slept in a tavern) that warned American colonists of the British invasion. From his mother s side, his uncles, Fritz-Dietlof Graf von der Schulenburg and Friedrich Werner Graf von der Schulenburg, were among the high-ranking German officers who were executed for their central roles in the July 20, 1944 assassination plot against Adolf Hitler. Gil holds degrees from New York University and Boston University. Early in his business career, he co-founded a consumer electronics start-up, and worked in Japan in strategic planning for a large global manufacturing company. Subsequently, Gil was an investment banker for several years, most recently as a Managing Director at J.P.Morgan. He has been an elder at Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco and is on the board of directors at Abilities United, a non-profit in Palo Alto, California that helps champion those with developmental or physical challenges. Gil Ahrens was born in Suffield, Connecticut and now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is married to Kim, an amazing woman with whom he shares the joy of raising a charming, brilliant and utterly wonderful young daughter. Together, they all succumb to the whims of Sparky, their domineering Jack Russell Terrier and Bella, a demur Scottish Terrier determined to dominate every inanimate object. He holds degrees from New York University and Boston University and briefly studied music at the New England Conservatory of Music. He is passionate about ice hockey, Formula 1 racing, University of Texas football, and cigars...a vice he acknowledges freely. He often wishes that he could be more Italian in mind, matter, or the spoken hand.

Review:

I am changed forever. ----Kevin Compton - General Partner, Kleiner Perkins Caufiled & Byers; Co-Owner, Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment and NHL San Jose Sharks.

I'll express my bias up front: Gil Ahrens is a dear friend, and has been for three decades. So this incredibly moving and honest account of what he has experienced is all the more impressive, because I have known him on both sides of it. This is a gripping, searing, and beautiful story, by a profoundly courageous man, one who let God use a terrible tragedy to make an even better man of him. ----Eric Metaxas - New York Times bestselling author of Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery, and Everything You Always Wanted to Know About God (but were afraid to ask).

This is a heroic portayal of dealing with adversity. Many men, especially successful ones, hide behind their belief that courage, strength, and success can be self-generated. Ahrens challenges that assumption through his own struggle, and proves that real strength in combat comes from surrendering first to God. This book will lift you up by bringing you to your knees. It will make you laugh, cry, scratch your head, and search your soul. It is for those who are weak who need strength, and for those who consider themselves strong, but are reluctant to confront their weakness. A must read for any parent who wants to share some wisdom with their children. --James N. Lane - Chairman New Canaan Society; former Senior Advisor, Ripplewood Capital; former Chairman SG Capital Partners; former Partner, Goldman Sachs & Co.
