This is the fifth of the books published by the Roberts Environmental Center at Claremont McKenna College on various aspects of global climate change analyzing and summarizing a se-lection of the papers published in scientific technical journals over the previous year. The evidence for increasing global temperatures and consequent changes in frequency, distribution, and intensity of precipitation, continues unabated. As I write this, President Barack Obama has just announced that he will attend the international conference on climate change held annually in Copenhagen later this month (De-cember 2009), the first American president to do so. He will agree to reduce US greenhouse gas emissions by 17% by 2020 in accordance with a bill passed by the House of Representatives earlier. Whether the Senate will agree and any such reductions will come to pass remains to be seen, but climate change is at least finally being taken seriously by an American administration, and seems finally to have got the attention of China's leaders as well.
