Raising babies and hunting moose . . . A collection of true stories about a girl who in 1956 marries against her better judgment. Three years and three babies later she finds herself on a homestead in Alaska in a rough, poorly insulated cabin in wild, primitive surroundings. Her husband spends most of his time at the neighbors fixing their machinery, for free. Meanwhile, back at the homestead, the "housewife" carries water and firewood; stuffs rags in cracks in an effort to keep out the cold; scrubs clothes on an old-fashioned washboard; takes care of all the children's needs and accidents and illnesses; tries to make their meager food supplies last; has close encounters of the scary kind with moose and bear- not to mention a few humans. This young mother has to use every bit of her ingenuity to keep her little family from freezing, and to keep food in their bellies. The incessant workload leads to full-fledged fatigue. Being alone to deal with petrifying situations ushers in deepening depression and despair. Yet somehow she finds the will to keep going...because she must.

The author turned out to be pretty normal (she thinks!) in spite of the embarrassment of wearing bloomers made of flour sacks in early childhood; of being one of the "out-crowd" during school; enduring the hardships of living on an Alaskan homestead; giving birth to (and raising) five children. She states, "It was rough, but it made me a stronger person." Notable quote (or quote of note): While our heroine was barefoot and pregnant on the homestead (well, not so much barefoot), her grandfather with his droll sense of humor predicted that "because she had been scared by a bear, the baby would be born with 'bare' feet." And they were!
