About the Author:
A tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) was founded in 1964 by a small group of physician members of the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) who recognized the need for the creation of a separate society dedicated to issues unique to clinical oncology. ASCO has more than 27,000 members worldwide. Its membership is comprised of clinical oncologists from all oncology disciplines and subspecialties including medical oncology, therapeutic radiology, surgical oncology, pediatric oncology, gynecologic oncology, urologic oncology, and hematology; physicians and health care professionals participating in approved oncology training programs; oncology nurses; and other health care practitioners with a predominant interest in oncology.
