Zulu Chest Cutter is a story of survival and perseverance of a young man who grew up under the oppressive Apartheid System in South Africa. Arthur N.S. Mcunu, Jr was born in Soweto and was raised in a two-bedroomed shoebox of a house. Dr. Mcunu, referred to as Sibusiso (Zulu for Blessing), began his quest for educational fulfillment in a land led by people who did not want him to learn. Despite restrictive space and financial challenges, Dr. Mcunu and his eccentric family thrived on love and the willingness to band together for support. Sibusiso perserverd in the hateful climate of Apartheid, overcoming profound adversity, even as he bore witness to some of the greatest atrocities committed against his people. Dr. Mcunu came to America to continue his education, where he has found success and fulfillment as a Zulu Chest Cutter.

Dr. Arthur N.S. Mcunu Jr was born in Soweto, South Africa in 1963, the year the urban settlement was officially named. He was raised in a tiny, two-bedroom structure, which he shared with nineteen of his relatives-four generations under a single roof. Arthur, or Sibusiso (his Zulu name, which translates to blessing), grew up during the height of black South Africa's rebellion against Apartheid, witnessing much of the movement's history firsthand. He participated in the Soweto Uprising of 1976 and was present for the massacre at the University of Zululand in 1983. Following this tragedy, Arthur returned home to Soweto with a heavy heart and a shaken constitution, unsure of of the next step in his pursuit of educational and professional advancement. Armed with his faith, persistence, and unwavering belief in his dream, Dr. Mcunu traveled to the U.S. in 1985 to earn his B.S. at Xavier University of Louisiana, where he met Anissa, the woman he would marry. He went on to Howard University College of Medicine, where he earned his M.D. and his surgical training. He later received his Cardiothoracic Surgery Certificate following a 3-year Fellowship Training at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. Today, Dr. Mcunu is an Assistant Professor of Surgery and the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he discovered his passion for heart surgery. He loves to teach, and in his free time he enjoys reading, composing and playing music (on the piano), and playing soccer. Dr. Mcunu lives in the Washington D.C. area with his beautiful wife and three children.
