In this Will Rogers Gold Medallion Award-winning work of fiction Mike LeMay, a Federal Writers’ Project interviewer arrives in a small Texas town days before the town eccentric, Effie Beck, is reported missing. While conducting his interviews, Mike learns that the enigmatic, elderly Miss Effie has moved through the lives of the town’s populace "like brown smoke" after having suffered a harsh childhood under the discipline of a cruel father. Paralleling Effie’s mysterious disappearance is the baffling relationship Mike observes between barefoot, bird-boned Jodean Travis, the young woman from whom he rents a room, and the rest of the community. By the time the WPA bridge collapses in a horrible storm, Mike knows what happened to the baby shoe matching the one found in Effie’s house, why Jodean is ostracized by the town, the real reason the sheriff’s wife sent her kids out of town for the summer, and how hurtful it is to live where all the good people look the other way.

Book Description Wkma Publishing, 2013. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Forgiving Effie Beck, winner of the WILL ROGERS GOLD MEDALLION AWARD and the EPIC Award for Historical Fiction, examines the complicated issues of a social order that existed in small town America during the Great Depression. The backdrop for the story is a community both paralyzed and comforted by sameness and tradition. It is that attitude which sets the stage for deception and isolates some of the town s beloved citizens. Mike LeMay, a Federal Writes Project interviewer arrives in Cooperville, Texas a few days before the town eccentric, Effie Beck, is reported missing. While conduction interviews for his FWP work, Mike learns that the enigmatic, elderly Miss Effie, moved like brown smoke on the outer edges of community social circles. What happen to Effie that she d walk out of her house and disappear? What secrets did she take with her? And, how will Cooperville cope when all the answers are found? Small wonder that the book already won the Will Rogers Gold Medallion. Stellar fiction about hard living during the Depression. Kirkus Reviews (starred review). Seller Inventory # APC9780984776818
