Sam was born in Spartanburg South Carolina moving to the mountains of Western North Carolina when he was six. With his family settling down in Flat Rock, it was hard not to be aware of the village's most famous resident, Carl Sandburg. One of Same's first poems was published in the local newspaper, The Times News. Soon after, he received a letter containing Sandburg's literary history and his autograph. Sandburg has continues to be an inspiration throughout Sam's writing and musical career. He started his musical publishing company, Town Mountain Music, in 1985, and established his record label, Driving Records, in 1993. Sam has resided in Flat Rock, Asheville, Raleigh and Spring Creek, North Carolina as well as St. Augustine, Florida and Islamorada, Florida Keys. He and his wife, Seajay, live on a barrier island on the Florida coast.
