Zane swore as a child to protect all the odd people of the world, studying chameleons and muscle groups to teach himself to alter his own appearance. No longer a young boy too smart and too different to fit in, Zane starts his first job at a pharmaceutical company where he uncovers layers of corporate secrets that hide surprisingly vile plans. Once he is sent on a sales trip to the South Pacific, it becomes clear that there are those who would kill to protect the mysteries that the company has worked so hard to keep hidden.
Charged with murder and hunted by an unsavory boot camp manager, he finds himself sailing to remote islands with a shadowy group known as y1. Fantasy, reality and a bit of speculative science come together as Zane uses all his unique abilities to resist turning from a murder suspect into a murder victim. He still wants to find a way to keep his childhood promise, if he can only live long enough to do so.

Sherrie Roth grew up in Western Kansas thinking that there was no place in the universe more fascinating than outer space. After her mother vetoed astronaut as a career ambition, she went on to study journalism and physics. She published her first science fiction short story in 1979 and waited a lot of tables while she looked for inspiration for the next story. When it finally came, it declared to her that it had to be whole book, nothing less. One night, while digesting this disturbing piece of news, she drank way too many shots of ouzo with her boyfriend. She woke up thirty-one years later demanding to know what was going on. The boyfriend, who she had apparently long since married, asked her to please calm down. He explained that in a fit of practicality she had gone back to school and gotten a degree in geophysics and had spent the last 28 years interpreting seismic data in the oil industry. The good news, according to Mr. Cronin, was that she had found it at least mildly entertaining and ridiculously well paying. The bad news was that the two of them had still managed to spend almost all of the money. Apparently, she was now Mrs. Cronin, and the further good news was that they had produced three wonderful children whom they loved dearly, even though to be honest that is where a lot of the money had gone. Even better news was that Mr. Cronin turned out to be a warm-hearted sort who was happy to see her awake and ready to write. "It's about time," were his exact words. Sherrie Cronin discovered that over the ensuing decades Sally Ride had already managed to become the first woman in space and apparently had done a fine job of it. No one, however, had written the book that had been in Sherrie's head for decades. The only problem was, the book informed her sternly that it had now grown into a six book series. Sherrie decided that she better start writing it before it got any longer. She has been wide awake ever since, and writing away.Review:
Review by Jane DeLong (Goodreads): Even though I am not a big sci-fi fan, I loved this book! I fell in love with Zane, the smart, quiet reluctant hero of the story who has an unusual gift. This book is a page turner -- do not open it unless you have a few hours to spend sailing the South Sea, navigating corporate politics, outwitting crooks and solving murders with a remarkable hero and his fascinating friends. Review by Sarah (Workaday Reads): This was an intriguing book that happened to teach me a little bit of knowledge on a lot of varied subjects, all while focusing on an exciting plot and enthralling characters. I'd never have believed that a book could take a murder mystery, a missing person mystery, paranormal abilities, fire dancing, pharmaceuticals, South Pacific geography and history, and meritocracy teachings and turn it into one cohesive story. Yet this book managed it. Review by Dorottya Bacsi (Goodreads) I LOVED this book! In spite of Zane's amazing abilities being an important point in the novel ... The story itself has a really interesting, fast-paced plot ... It kept us doing the guessing game ... with tiny little clues and facts. It truly was exciting. Review by Mickey Otterlei (Goodreads) : Y1 is the story of Zane Zeitman, discovering his ability to camouflage and the way this ability helps him fight his was out of the cables of "normality" and help him do right. All, in a fast moving plot that takes one sailing to and from islands and atolls in the South Pacific, and a pharmaceutical conspiracy that turns into a murder investigation.... you cannot put it down.
