9780985161927: The Making of a Two-bit Mystic: Motorcycle Days (Volume 1)

The author rides through Midwest America hearing echoes from Walden and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and looking for answers. At one time on motorcycle trips, if he focused right, he experienced an aliveness in his surroundings—the way music is alive. He’s trying to find this life again. But he’s struggling. His clues are such small blips on a ride that has some pretty messed up parts.

About the Author:

I wrote this book while living in a trailer with a semi-hostile cat on a wooded Ozark ridge. That I’m a night watchman with a math/physics degree surprises people. “What happened?” is a usual comment. This book is my response. It addresses issues that can’t be neatly caged in words, but that do need to be addressed in an examined life.

Book Description Go-Turtle Publishing LLC, United States, 2015. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. So what s your book about anyway? I look up at Lewis preparing his hamburger-ketchup, salt. His question pauses me. There s a part of my book that s easy to talk about. Well, one part of it is taking the reader along on what was really a pretty messed up 1200 mile motorcycle ride. Lewis glances at me. That sounds interesting, then continues his preparations. I hesitate. The other part of the book considers ideas from Thoreau s Walden and Robert Pirsig s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. As I ride on my trip, I continue a conversation from these two books on how we should be living. Lewis pauses and looks up from his meal. Oooo-kaaay. Then his attention goes back to his hamburger. I look at my food again-and start putting it together. The how-we-should-live part of the book is always hard to talk about in two sentences. But the two thread of the book really fit together. It s like we live on a cusp between two worlds. I ride a motorcycle and tent camp-an excellent exercise to keep me grounded in one of these worlds-the real world of spark plugs and wrenches, of paying bills and bank accounts. If I drift away from this world during a cycle ride, something will always draw me back-like a horn bracket breaking. The bike starts jerking-it s missing out. I pull over to the side of the rainy Iowa backroad. Now what? I slide off the bike and squat at its side. The horn is hanging by wires. Bare connections are hitting a cylinder, shorting out the engine. I decide that I don t really need the horn to continue. In the rain, I dig out my tools, take off the horn and tape the bare wires. The wet tape doesn t want to stick. I finally finish and get back on the bike and continue. This real world is where we live. But at other times-on cycle rides mostly, especially my early rides-another world appears. Camped in a ravine facing the Pacific, my campfire glows on the walls. Tide waves inch closer, swishing bubbles then sinking into the pebbles. I stare. And like one of those magic-eye-book pages, a hidden scene appears within this real world-and an area of ravine wall is dancing. Something inside me sways with the movement-more in sync, more in sync. Then a cold, rogue wave wets my foot-like pain. I recoil my leg. I scoot up the beach a little higher and take off my shoe and sock to dry at the fire. I look up and the wall is still. An understanding about connections between worlds hovers but doesn t settle. I use the word mystic. I am comfortable with the term because in my best moments the objects of this world are alive-not in the sense that they have a soul or that they are even sentient; they are alive the way a piece of music is alive. But I don t really fit into the mystic camp because mystic doesn t imply some kind of supernatural world to me. It doesn t matter to me if these experiences are connected to some supernatural realm or not. It seems that I m not in the materialist camp either because these experiences seem so important. To me, they breathe life into artistic, spiritual-maybe all-truly human endeavors. Such experiences are what I m after-but carefully, only to add sparkle to this real life not to swallow it. So I guess I m a not-wanting-to-be-overly-serious mystic, a watered down mystic-a two-bit mystic. R P Antweiler. Bookseller Inventory # APC9780985161927

Ive been putting this thing together for 20 years, struggling to get the words right. Whats a good ten second answer Well, mostly its about trying to see the world in a way that infuses some magic into life. My framework of motorcycle travel and the stories of native peoples and farmers and prospectors help to illustrate what that way of seeing is. Its like we live on a cusp between two worlds. I ride a motorcycle and tent campan excellent exercise to keep me grounded in one of these worldsthe real world of car keys and bank accounts, spark plugs and wrenches. If I drift away from this world something during a cycle ride will always draw me backlike a horn bracket breaking. The bike jerks, missing out. Serious. I look at the still wall. An understanding about connections between worlds hovers but doesnt settle. I sometimes feel like a man without a country. I dont fit into the mystic camp because it doesnt matter to me if these experiences are connected to some supernatural realm.
