9780985187644: People of the Cimarron Country

Historian Stephen Zimmer is a favorite among readers of Old West adventures. In this volume he shares over two dozen biographical sketches of people who have made the Cimarron Country great. Scores of rare historical photographs illustrate these pages and bring the stories to life. This collection includes such well-known people as Kit Carson, Lucien Maxwell, and Waite Phillips. It also tells the stories of ordinary western ranchers and cattlemen who are heroes in their own right.
"Reading this book is like riding into the high country with a posse of great story-tellers"
-- Warren Cole Smith

From the Back Cover:

The Cimarron Country has attracted an amazing variety of memorable characters throughout its history. The word "Cimarron" means wild or untamed, and this part of northeastern New Mexico earned a reputation for being a wild frontier settlement.
Because of an unfortunate land grant war, it had more than its share of bloodshed and endured enough civil unrest to warrant "shoot-em-up" status by the best of Hollywood standards. But Cimarron was shaped primarily by the decent people who made it an agreeable place to raise children, go to church, conduct business, and make a living from the land.
Most of the people whose stories are included here are not well known beyond the boundaries of present-day Colfax County, New Mexico. Together, however, they give us a glimpse into the lives of diverse and industrious folks who were not unlike the inhabitants of countless frontier town across the American West. Dozens of rare historical photos illustrate this wonderful volume and bring these stories to life.

About the Author:

Stephen Zimmer comes from four generations of western cattle ranchers. He holds BA and MA degrees in history from the University of New Mexico. For twenty-five years he served as director of museums at Philmont Scout Ranch. He is the author of several books and numerous articles which have appeared in such popular periodicals as Western Horseman, New Mexico Magazine, Cowboy Magazine, and Wild West. He now lives on his Double Z Bar Ranch outside Cimarron, New Mexico, where he writes about western art and ranch life.
