9780985477721: Angle of Attack: An Adventure in Aviation, Love, and Crime

A botched diamond theft and a woman's murderous lust for power set deadly traps for wrongly-convicted Cicero Clay, who must evade a corrupt parole system and survive pursuit through night skies in a vintage WWII fighter.

"I am innocent. The newspapers refer to me as thirty-eight-year-old Cicero Clay, glider flight instructor and paroled convict. But I didn't do it. I can prove it. And no, you don't want to call me by my first name. I am Clay."

...so begins Lee Baldwin's Angle of Attack. In the words of one Amazon reviewer, "Lee Baldwin has captured the pace of James Lee Burke and the descriptive ability of John Steinbeck."

Soaring NZ Magazine's review stated it's "...a rattling good ride...really good and totally believable..."

Set in the worlds of high-performance soaring, WWII fighter aircraft, the world's most expensive diamonds and lovely, quirky women, Baldwin's 2012 mystery novel is "a wonderful afternoon read" that "pushes all the right mystery buttons," according to other reviewers.

So, who is the dead man on Clay's porch? How can a glider become a murder weapon? Who is it drugs Clay, then slides into his bed late at night? Who stole his Parole Agent's diamond necklace?

Baldwin interleaves plot threads like a master, his tale rooted in everyday realties keeps raising the stakes until the reader is flying through night skies in a stolen warbird, trying to avoid disaster while heading for a place in history.

                 - Dr. Brian McKenzie on Amazon

It was a very good story. I gave it four stars.

Angle of Attack was not really like any book I've read before, so I was very surprised by how well it held my attention.

It is a mystery/suspense novel that is primarily a story in which the hero has been set up to take the fall for some serious crimes and must figure out who is trying to frame him and why. He has also been working with his brother to repair an essentially stolen WWII Mustang P-51 fighter and make it sufficiently air-worthy to fly to New Mexico where it is being purchased by some mysterious buyers.

With the airplane side plot and the hero being a pilot (although primarily of gliders), there is a strong aviation element.

This is also the first book I've ever read in the male first-person POV. I thought that this perspective, added to the rapid fire pace and writing style, gave the book something of a hard-boiled feel even though Clay isn't a detective.

For me anyway, the book had a unique and different aspect to it that was an enjoyable departure from my usual reading material.
