Learn How to Follow Your Own Instincts and Become the Savviest Wine Picker in Town!
Use the skills you already have to find the wines you'll enjoy the most. Want to become a consummate wine consumer effortlessly? Then let J.P. Bary be your guide. Through series of ten engaging conversations, Bary coaches readers through all the steps needed to select, store and serve wines successfully, concentrating on the most common stumbling blocks, pitfalls and sources of confusion and giving practical advice about how to overcome them. Instead of presenting the subject of wine in a categorical fashion, this entertaining book helps you take an intimate look at your own taste preferences and shows you why learning to trust your own instincts is more important than studying diagrams of the tongue or obsessing over aroma wheels. You'll learn how to predict how wines will taste before you drink them and pair them properly--not just with foods, but with people and occasions.

No musts - No fuss!
Without tables, charts or listings of regions and producers to memorize, or a glossary of definitions to study before you can understand what he says, Bary helps you build all the essential skills you need to develop a personal relationship with wine and become a very savvy consumer. He identifies the most persistent misconceptions about wine and explains how labels, ratings, marketing ploys and even well-intentioned advice can mislead you. He takes the mystery out of wine tasting and explains why most people get confused when they listen to the descriptions given by wine professionals. You'll learn how to read between reviewers' lines and tell whether sommeliers and retailers are being helpful or giving you the runaround.

Find out what's missing in all the other wine guidesWhether mind numbingly "complete" or misleadingly "simple," most wine guides treat the subject of wine as a curriculum to be presented topic by topic. Instead, this book recognizes that learning about wine is a process and keeps the focus on the essential information you need to know at each stage. With sensitivity and humor, the author concentrates on helping you avoid mistakes and coaches you step by step as you learn all the essential skills needed to pick and enjoy the wines that are best for you on every occasion. Rather than telling people what they should know about wine, Bary asked them what they needed to know. Here he reveals the results of his research and explains why the experts can't tell you what you need to know. Filled with unique insights and practical tips, this book is what every wine consumer needs to read in order to truly understand what the others are trying to say.

From the Author:

This book is the result of over ten years of research talking about wine with ordinary consumers to find out what they consider most confusing and intimidating about the subject.  Adam Gopnik observes that "the space between what wine writers say and what wine novices actually taste is the standard subject of satire." My belief is that this occurs because wine writers have been concentrating too much on the wine and too little on the ordinary consumer. In The Persistent Observer's Guide to Wine, I try to rectify this imbalance and help you realize that you already have most of the basic skills necessary to become a very savvy wine consumer.  Your own sense of taste and the circumstances under which you drink any glass of wine are unique.  That's why you can't rely on the opinions of others to guide your selections and need to learn to be comfortable with your own.  This book shows you how to quickly connect with your personal sense of taste and use it to build a deeply satisfying, lifelong relationship with wine.

From the Back Cover:

Comments by Readers
"I think it's really excellent, well written and although lots of detail, not tedious, easy to keep going." John Sharpe, Retired COO, Four Seasons Resorts and Trustee Emeritus, Culinary Institute of America, Toronto, Ontario.
"I've read a lot of "basic guides" and I can honestly say yours is the approach to which I best relate. You make the reader laugh and keep him/her interested. You trust the reader to understand more than a lot of basic books do, but you don't cross the line and go too in depth.  This is very, very good material and I can think of a dozen (or more) people to whom I would recommend your book." Emily Turner, Author, Emily in the Glass, Louisville, KY
"The book is written with a personal tone that made it very comfortable to read and understand. I will give copies to my three children when it is published.  I know they will enjoy reading it." Tullio Bori, Engineer, Metuchen, NJ. "Overall observation - I liked it, I liked it a lot. Just to be clear, I was a reader who had no interest in wine, or in learning anything about wine. My knowledge increased in a comfortable way, much easier than absorbing an encyclopedic description of wines." Robert Friedman, Attorney, NY, NY
"I have read a few wine books for unsophisticated wine lovers like me ----mostly boring. Yours has a great style and thank God, does not preach to those of us who are rank amateurs.  May I share your draft with my son-in-law?  Loved your book! En avant!" Anna Longobardo, Engineer, Bronxville, NY
"Pairing is indeed a pleasant entertainment and you lay out the basic skills very well and present it in a very informal and accessible way." Francis Furey, Documentary Producer, San Fransisco, CA.
"Haven't read a wine book with quite this personal and individualized point of view.  Empowering actually." Dudley Perry, Attorney, Montgomery, AL.
