A story based on facts from the historical Armistice Day blizzard of 1940 that took the lives of dozens of duck hunters in the upper Mississippi River valley. Bob Steffes is 16 years old and is excited about playing for his town's summer baseball team. Yet, he still sits in the shadow of his older high school teammate, Ed, who is the star pitcher of a neighboring town team. The two young men face off on the baseball field for the city title. Their battle reconvenes in the river bottoms only a month later when their paths cross again on November 11th, 1940, during the historic Armistice Day blizzard. Can they work together to survive?

Jon Steffes is an elementary teacher in La Crescent, Minnesota. He keeps busy working in his community running the summer recreation program and organizing youth events. Jon writes for an upper elementary to high school audience. His love of fishing, hunting, and the Mississippi River valley in which he loves comes through in his writing. Jon is married to his wonderful wife JoAnn and has a son Calvin, and daughters, Kathryn and Meghan. This is Jon's second book. His first book, Dirty Hands, also takes place in the Mississippi River valley, specifically Minnesota. Jon's next book, already in progress, is somewhat of a biography, focusing on his experiences growing up with a disabled father, yet still finding a way to experience the outdoors with the help of friends and family. The book will then move onto the special relationship Jon has with his son, Cal, who was just diagnosed with juvenile diabetes and is his favorite hunting and fishing partner.
