9780986001918: Master of Westfall Plantation

It is 1857 and Tilmon Goodwyn wields absolute power over his island plantation but hardly makes a profit because of his profligate spending and gambling. He secures financial benefits from his wealthy widowed mother, but when she trifles with an opportunistic artist, Tilmon meets head-on with a threat to his inheritance. Tilmon’s wife Georgiana, an orphan raised by an abolitionist, has married well because of her exceptional beauty. To secure her husband’s devotion, she vows to give him many sons, though her babies die. During her eighth pregnancy, she can no longer ignore signs that her husband has a base and shocking secret. Violence breeds in Westfall’s closet, and as a result the one servant Tilmon trusts dies suddenly. Tilmon buries his man but not the suspicions that linger. He credits himself with the benevolent care of his family and slaves, but little does he know of the venom hidden in their acts of obedience.

About the Author:

Award winning author Bonnie Stanard has written a companion novel to Kedzie, Saint Helena Island Slave, published in 2011. Born and raised in rural South Carolina, Stanard’s interest in the conditions and fate of South Carolina slaves grew out of her family’s experience in working the land when descendants of slaves were still struggling to make their way as free men and women. Though she has traveled far from the farm, she often returns to it in her writing. In addition to historical fiction, she writes poetry and short stories which have been published in journals such as Harpur Palate, The Griffin, and Slipstream. She has edited periodicals in Brussels, Belgium (Rendez-vous), Richmond (Fanfare), and rural South Carolina (FairView News). She lives in Columbia, SC with her husband Douglas Stanard and expects to complete the Westfall trilogy with a novel in 2013.
