Using the power of secular blessings, powerful meditative stories, poetry, and thoughtful consolations, In the Garden of Hearts creates an oasis where teachers can find space...space to step back and look at teaching, and their lives, from a different perspective, a wider lens, one that has the potential to open doors to new ways of thinking of about themselves, their classrooms, and their students.
Pete Reilly doesn't tell teachers what to teach nor how to teach it, but rather, using the 'teacher as gardener' and the 'classroom as garden' metaphor, offers much needed nourishment for their heroic hearts. In the Garden of Hearts is a refreshing book filled with hope for educators traveling the long road to teaching mastery.
This a book that every teacher will want to keep near at hand whether drinking their morning coffee or on their nightstand for a few minutes of reading before bed. If you're an educator called to help young people find their unique gifts, the power of their own voices, and their life's grand purpose, then In the Garden of Hearts is for you.

"Finally a book on teaching that is mercifully not didactic. In the Garden of Hearts is an inspirational, moving and even magical journey into what teaching and life are supposed to be. My parents were both teachers, and I just wish they were still around so I could give them a copy."
-August Turak, Author, The Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks
"The point is to live everything," Pete Reilly says at the outset of this gorgeous book, quoting the poet Rilke. We shouldn't need a book to remind us that the quality and depth of life itself is the only true test of education. But into the clockwork orange educational world our society is busily manufacturing along comes this one to remind us as deeply as any I know that any education worth the name must always originate in the tender tendering of life, not the busy manufacturing of it. The book begins at a sacred well. Let it be the bedtime companion that helps you draw from yours--and so grow ever more awake to the day-to-day, heart-to-heart blessings through which we carefully water the lives of our students!
-Bruce Novak, co-author, Teaching Literacy for Love and Wisdom: Being the Book and Being the Change
"Teaching calls forth the best in us. No matter our inner voices and distractions, those we teach depend of us to dig into the depths of our souls to serve their hunger to learn, of which they are sometimes unaware. Meeting this calling is one of life's greatest challenges. Pete Reilly's In the Garden of Hearts is a muse and companion reminding teachers why they have chosen this path. At the same time offering them a respite from the intensity of life's experiences where they can be renewed for the next day. In the spirit of John O'Donohue, Pete Reilly reveals truths that transcend language and reassure us of the rewards of following the path of 'teacher'."
-Thomas White, CEO, C-Suite Network
"In his insightful book, Pete Reilly finds the intricate connection between self, spirituality, and caring for others. He also explores and identifies the essential relationship that exists between self-reflection and appreciation for ourselves and others. His book is an essential read for teachers, allowing them to use his words as sources of inspiration and understanding for the work we do each day with children."
-Stany Leblanc, Principal Apprentice, Leaders in Educational Apprenticeship Program (LEAP)
"Thoughtful words encapsulating every teacher's hopes and fears while soothing our minds with positivity and optimism around each situation we may encounter in our professional and interconnected personal lives. These meditations support the birth or rebirth of a new, mindful teacher capable of discovering wisdom, even in the most tumultuous circumstances."
-Yoshie Otomo, Teacher, Mott Hall Science and Technology Academy, South Bronx, NY
