9780986723308: Change Your Dam Thinking: How to Design a Company That Flows and Grows

Each chapter in this book consists of stories. There is a moral to all of these stories: you will grow as a flow thinker and you will be damned as a dam thinker. The choice is yours. What is DAM thinking? The book presents five dams, for example the ego dam stops the flow of productivity. How? If there is a serious problem and you fail to ask for help, what is stopping you? Ego. What does that block? Production. Why is this important? Companies with DAM thinking suffer from stagnation, pollution, and pressure. Nothing much matters in a DAM thinking company, because not much gets done. Companies that FLOW and GROW deliver their product and service with velocity and quality. But more than that a FLOW thinking company develops market disruptive methods and technologies that emerge from the collective intelligence of the work force. Flow companies are all about Velocity, Quality, and Emergence. Flow companies are all about people. Work is social. People's behaviors lead business results. People's behavior is governed by their thinking. This book will show you how to find and develop something called complex solutions and show you how you can develop your own unique complex plan; your own unique business improvement system. Companies that understand this don't just perform well, they completely dominate the markets they serve. This book not only provides understanding, but detail on how you can move forward and design your own company that flows and grows.

From the Author:

One of the first business books I ever read as a teenager was "Managing," by Harold Geneen.   Geneen was very famous in his day and made ITT define what a corporate conglomerate was.  I still have the book, worn, and fragile, and still relevant.   Consider Geneen's statement, "I have never come across a chief executive who tried, much less succeeded, running his company according to any set formula, chart, or business theory."  And he is right!  A business isn't about complicated formulas.  A business isn't suppose to require an enormously high IQ to understand.  To run a business, as my grandfather use to say, "..is simply using common sense."  A business is about people.  People who are behaving badly will create a bad business.  Geneen understood that and using the mastermind concept, which goes back to Andrew Carnegie and US Steel, he was able to generate unlimited growth.  But you wont be able to see and understand his lessons, or the lessons of Louis Gerstner who turned IBM around, or the fabulous lessons of Robert Sutton in his book, "The No Asshole Rule" if you have thinking dams.  This book is very simple and an easy read.  It is meant to be understood by anyone that has an interest in business; from the young adult in high school to the seasoned C level executive.  I illustrate through stories the choice in front of you and why you need to make the choice: to abandon your thinking dams and become a much better person by adopting the openness, creativity, and emergent qualities of flow-thinking.  Flow-thinking that has proven time and time to work.  Flow-thinking that up until now has never been clearly explained.

From the Back Cover:

Gray's definition of the different "dams" that have clogged the flow of our operations have been instrumental in developing our strategies to improve everything from our internal design and development activities to our interfaces with our customers in solving their problems.  We have learned a valuable set of lessons in that we know that work is social and the entire operation is interconnected.  Gray's book is a provocative and practical look at the challenges of business today.--Mark B. Thomas, CEO, HEI, Inc.In "Change Your DAM Thinking," Gray McQuarrie distills a lifetime of experience, research and experimentation in business transformation into simple lessons.  In doing so, ha manages to respond to the essential complexity of real businesses in the real world without introducing the complications that befuddle so many enterprises.  The evidence that this works can be found in the stunning results of McQuarrie's work with multiple businesses.  The results come at a cost, as the new "Flow-Thinking: that McQuarrie heralds is incompatible with the "Dam-Thinking" that creates the problems businesses face.  But the map he provides and his experience in making the journey can assure a company of success with their own unique business system, not a copy of a current fad."--Dr. Frank Delk, Counder and President of Delk & AssociatesGray McQuarrie has demonstrated an unusual ability to simplify complicated business situations.  His process-oriented approach improves the way people think about their business and their role within the business.  This rapidly translates into logical, measurable behavioral changes and positive impact to the bottom line.--Bill Brandell, CEO and co-founder MacBRAND Partners
