The daughter of a GP, Juleen Petrusa Marais, grew up in Windhoek, the ‘windy corner’ of what was then South West Africa. Although described as the capital, Windhoek was nothing more than a small town where everybody knew everybody. Not being blessed in the beauty department, Juleen remembers having a hard time as a young child. Her feet were huge, she was clumsy and always tripping over. From this unpromising beginning Juleen experienced quite extraordinary things in her life. Forbidden by her father to take up nursing, she travelled overseas where she worked and had many amusing adventures. On her return to South Africa she met and married Rob High, the love of her life. This unassuming chemical engineer from a small country town in New South Wales proved to be amazingly adept at languages and together they worked all over the world.
