9780988266803: Trying To Be Grown: Trying To Be Grown By Michael Victor Whatley Jr

“Trying To Be Grown” is a compilation of poetry written by Michael Victor Whatley Jr. It was driven by his eagerness to become an adult and role model in a world so contradicting. Written with intentions of appealing, relating, and educating teenagers to adults. The book explores the author’s ideas on life during his time. It explores his feelings on high school and college relationships, as well as his views on life in general. It reflects on the effects of premarital sex and its transition to a false sense of love. Though I’m only 21, I’m thinking about growing old, I had lived a promiscuous childhood but I had really slowed down. Here I was a college student, and even though there had been so many beautiful woman on campus, I had only been in an intimate relationship with one, whether you can believe it or not. Though she told me not to fall, I fell, and what may have seemed like something small to her, I valued more everyday. It was all over now though, and I began to feel lonely all over again. Though I was progressing and enjoying my success I had began craving that satisfaction of the opposite sex. I just couldn’t figure it out; sometimes I felt over confident and other moments I found myself feeling insecure. It was the thought of gaining more success, and growing old and lonely. I refuse to front and cheat myself, from some of the greatest joys in life: some children and a wife God willingly. I wanted to take on the responsibilities but I wasn’t really financially stable yet, her heart she refused to let me play with that, and eventually left me alone, I was just a young man on his own trying to be grown.

About the Author:

Whatley, a 21-year-old District native, knows something about choices: Growing up in Northeast’s Rosedale neighborhood, he chose football over drugs. Now, as he prepares to finish school and fully enter adulthood, he has chosen writing over football. “Trying to Be Grown,” a collection of poems Whatley published this year, tells a coming-of-age story that only hints at his youth in public housing, his brother’s killing in 1992 and, soon after, his father’s death in prison. He writes in one poem: Life has never been easy I’ve always been tough I’ve learned that enough Will never be enough. Whatley says he prefers to focus on his maturation than dwell on his early childhood. “The poems are how I felt during my transition,” he says. “Now I’m becoming more comfortable with my own talents, and I know where I want to go in life.” Whatley was 2 when his brother Donte Octavious Reed, 19, was shot dead. A year later, his father — in prison awaiting an appeal of a bank-robbery conviction — died of cancer and complications from AIDS. His neighborhood was frequently visited by violence, and he recalls attending his first funeral for a slain friend when he was in the sixth grade. The coach seized on the former player’s success during a rally against crime this month, when he took the podium on the Rosedale field, waved the poetry book and briefly told Whatley’s story. “I see a young man who has emerged from here strong,” Cotton said in an interview later. “Too many end up locked up or dead. The biggest challenge around here is survival.”
