From the Author:
Amontillado went through many iterations. It began as a single-scene short story, and that scene lives on whenever two of the main characters stand arguing in the rain beneath a streetlamp. When I moved to New Jersey and worked for a film production company, I had the crazy idea of turning that short story into a screenplay. It's the best screenplay I've written, although the competition is rather scarce.
When my daughter was born, the ex-wife and I moved back to Chicago. With no film-making friends in the area, I decided to write novels. The first novel, The Unacknowledged, was mostly an attempt to determine if I had the persistence and tenacity to endure the endeavor. I did, but the manuscript needed work. Today, it resides in a shoe-box in my basement, serving as an effective first step in a lengthy learning process.
From there I set about adapting the Amontillado screenplay into novel form. Incidentally, six months after I finished the first draft, my marriage ended. Given a few eerie similarities between the story and my reality at the time, several years passed before I could effectively tackle the rewrites. I had a lot of help from the Chicago Writers Association and my critique group. The result is the book you see here, and it's a testament to the power of perseverance. It's been with me so long I can't tell you if it's good or not, but I'm certainly proud of it.
Of course, if you had told me, all those years ago when I wrote the short story, I'd still be working on it today, I'd have laughed at you. But, as the characters in the book learn, sometimes there's very little we can do to control the events of our lives. All we can do is ride out the storm and try to keep moving forward. When we do, it's amazing what we can accomplish.
