About the Author:

Will Moredock is a native son of South Carolina, with degrees in journalism from the University of Georgia and the University of South Carolina. His journalism career includes a stint as staff writer at The State. He was founder, publisher and editor of Point newsweekly, in Columbia and news editor at Creative Loafing in Charlotte. Most recently, he wrote a weekly column about South Carolina politics and culture for ten years for Charleston City Paper. He is currently putting together a collection of those columns, scheduled for publication early in 2014. Like many of you, Will is saddened and angered by the political divide of his state, by the way race is constantly used to divide and define people, to play on people's fears for political and economic gain. Racism is at the root of South Carolina's intractable social problems, including endemic poverty, poor public education, and environmental degradation. These are some of the themes he touches on in his new digital book, Banana Republic Revisited -- 75 Years of Madness, Mayhem & Minigolf in Myrtle Beach. Banana Republic Revisited is an update to his 20013 book Banana Republic -- A Year in the Heart of Myrtle Beach, which won wide praise for its unvarnished look at the political corruption, the environmental destruction and social problems created by pouring millions of tourists and billions of dollars into a once sleepy southern beach town. As Will writes, Myrtle Beach is South Carolina on steroids, with all the political and social pathologies focused and "pumped up" in one surreal community. The Grand Strand is a world of T-shirt shops, strip clubs, Baptist piety, low-wage poverty and uncontrolled development.
