When a bomb is left on reporter Kelly Sand's desk, she's determined to find out who wants her to stop reporting on corporate growth in rural Florida. The open threat thrusts Kelly back into the arms of her editor and former lover, Bart Stanley.

Together, the two begin to unravel the master plan of major developers who want to destroy the last vestiges of Florida's natural beauty. Tortoise Stew is a satire on political crime and Florida sensibilities.

A sometimes humorous, often harrowing, and never boring Florida suspense novel, Tortoise Stew contains a cast of characters who leave dead armadillos as calling cards, dynamite ponds as a way to fish, and carry guns under Santa Claus costumes during the annual Christmas parade.

The novel also addresses the ramifications of adoption after rape and the impact on both parents and children. All the while the developers and environmentalists fling insults and intrigue as murder and fatal accidents bombard the small communities of rural north Florida.

As she investigates the plots building up, Kelly heads inside a mental institution for more ammunition. When it gets about as insane as it can get, the 2000 presidential election looms in the background providing a surreal quality to the antics of these characters.
Through it all, the steamy relationship between Kelly and Bart heats up to hot as they rediscover what brought them together in the first place.
Fasten your seatbelts for one raucous ride through the quagmire of crazy characters befitting a novel set in Florida.n politics.

From the Author:

Sometimes the muse leads us where we need to go. In early 2002, I was a reporter for  a 5,000 circulation weekly newspaper in north Florida. I covered one of the more contentious city commissions as a large company known for building supercenters charged into the small community with promises of economic nirvana for all.

One Tuesday morning in February, I made my rounds of the local city police departments to pick up the police reports for the past week before heading to the newspaper's office. When I turned the corner, police tape encircled the building, and I saw my coworkers wandering around outside.

"Don't worry - no one was hurt," the publisher said as he rushed toward me when I got out of my car. "They were able to detonate the bomb before anything happened."

That morning someone dropped a bomb off in the paper's drop box. The bomb, filled with little bits of glass and nails, shot 70 yards outside the building when set off by the experts.

We were barely six months past 9/11, and the world reeled around us. The national media started calling, but the FBI said it would be months before a full-scale investigation could begin. Around the same time, mailboxes were being blown up in the Midwest, and our little bomb scare with no deaths amounted to nothing after the first twenty-four hours. Fortunately, I went away to the Keys a few days later for a planned and now much needed vacation.

As the breezes blew through the curtains of the beach house, I woke with a line in my head.

"The bomb sat on Kelly Sands' desk for an hour before she noticed it." I opened my laptop  and typed in the line.

The first line of Tortoise Stew never changed through many revisions. Writing the novel helped me cope with my fear of another bomb finding its way to the drop box or under the hood of my car as I sat at yet another commission meeting with shouting matches filled with threats from both sides. My muse wrote Tortoise Stew.

Book Description P.C. Zick. Paperback. Condition: New. 286 pages. Dimensions: 9.0in. x 6.0in. x 0.7in.A Florida Environmental Novel from P. C. Zick - Small town politics take center stage in this novel about the development of Florida at any cost. The bomb sat in a bag on Kelly Sands desk for an hour before she noticed it. And so begins the raucous journey through small town Florida politics in Tortoise Stew. Kelly Sands is a reporter covering some of the more controversial and contentious issues in the north Florida town of Calloway. Dead armadillos and gopher tortoise carcasses left as calling cards to those opposing the development of rural Florida show small town politics at its worst. Commission meetings erupt into all-out warfare. With the murder of one commissioner and the suicide of his wife, Kelly begins an investigation that threatens to topple the carefully laid plans of the developers and politicians to bring a movie studio and landing strip within the city limits of the small town. When a semi-truck from Monster Mart runs over and kills a young girl, the environmentalists become even more vocal against the developers plans. All the while, Kelly struggles to overcome and escape her past, which catches up to her as she follows the antics of the politicians, developers, and environmentalists. With the help of her boss, Bart, and her best friend, Molly, she uncovers more than corruption in small town politics. This item ships from multiple locations.
