Models of biblical preaching of Philippians by veteran preacher and teacher of preachers provides a model of preaching using a combination of solid scholarly study, fidelity to the meaning and intent of the biblical author, oral clarity, contemporary relevance, humor, and creativity. “Pastors who plan on preaching through any of these biblical books,” says Sunukjian, “could be drawn to these sermons as models or as stimulating prompters for their own messages.”

Donald R. Sunukjian holds a Ph.D. from UCLA in Speech Communication and a Th.D. in Bible Exposition from Dallas Theological Seminary, where he taught preaching for more than ten years. He is now Professor of Christian Ministry and Leadership at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, where he has taught preachers since 1996. He has also served as senior pastor for fourteen years.
Sunukjian is the author of Invitation to Biblical Preaching: Proclaiming Truth with Clarity and Relevance (Kregel), which is a leading textbook on the craft of preaching. It was awarded the annual preaching book award for PreachingToday.com in 2007, and it has been translated in French, Korean, and Spanish. He has contributed to The Bible Knowledge Commentary, Biblical Preaching, Bibliotheca Sacra, Walvoord: A Tribute, and The Big Idea of Biblical Preaching. Dr. Sunukjian has conducted pastors' conferences in most metropolitan centers of the United States and maintains a regular preaching schedule.
His passion is to see God's Word presented with accuracy, clarity, interest, and relevance. With doctorates in theology and communication and fourteen years as a senior pastor, he brings both scholarship and experience to these six expositions.
Some years ago I wrote a textbook—Invitation to Biblical Preaching—which has been translated into several languages and is being used rather widely to develop biblical preachers. This current series of volumes is being published as an Invitation to sermons on specific biblical books, individuals, or themes. The purpose of this series is to offer models of the principles presented in the textbook
A sermon comes alive when it is true to the biblical author’s flow of thought, clear in its unfolding, interesting to listen to, and relevantly connected to contemporary life. Hopefully that’s true of the messages in this book.
These messages were originally preached before a congregation of God’s people, and then slightly edited to their present form in order to adjust from the ‘hearing ear’ to the ‘reading eye’. But I’ve tried my best to retain their “oral flavor”—I’ve wanted them to still sound “like we talk.” This means there will be incomplete sentences, as well as colloquial and idiomatic language.
I’ve also occasionally included some “stage directions”, so that you can visualize any props or large physical movements that were part of a message.
May God speak to your heart through his Word.
