9780989178594: Insensible Loss

When Olivia becomes a volunteer at St. John’s hospital for NODA (No One Dies Alone), her first patient is Viktor Erikson, an elderly man whose hand she is to hold until, hopefully, a family member arrives. In the last hours of his life, Viktor asks Olivia to read aloud the ancient leather-bound book he carries with him always, The Ethics of Immortality. As Olivia begins reading the story of Viktor and Morgana Erikson—who sail the seas, find adventure, and plan to live together forever—she assumes that it is a fictionalized account of her patient’s ancestors. After all, how could the same Viktor be alive in both 1839 and now in 2053? But the deeper Olivia delves into the story, the more she begins to question. Could this be the same Viktor? Is Morgana coming to save him? And did they really discover the water of life?

From the Author:

"What if you found the fountain of youth, and it didn't keep you young, but made you young? That was the first question that came to mind. Next, if you were young, say a baby, how would you grow old without some one else?I guess the one question starts to pose other questions. How much trust would you have in that other person to care for you? It would have to be total trust and confidence to take turns rising one another after drinking from the fountain of youth. If you did it for love, but the one you love is not a good person... well there were lots of possibilities in a story like that. How do you choose the best story from those rules, that is the question. That is what I tried to provide the reader. Something fun, exciting, romantic, and dramatic. I tried to write something my mom would enjoy, like Flash Gordon with Buster Crab, or Indian Jones with Harrison Ford. Fun, exciting, and a little bit dark."

Review:

"The plot is clever and well developed, while at the ame time reserving an air of mystery and an unpredictable ending. The prose is well written and provides a vivid picture of a story that requests your full attention and imagination.

Saying anything more would spoil a great story. I highly recommend this author. Read this book!""Insensible Loss is one of my favorite books from 2016 so far. Short, bittersweet, and to the point Paul Michael Peters tells a story that feels like bits and pieces I've read before, but pulled together in a new and compelling story.
The characters purposefully aren't terribly endearing, at least right up until the twist. A bit of swashbuckling, immortality, love, and deceitfulness is what drives the story. The twist at the end takes this from a 4 star book to a 5 star book for me, it made me totally rethink all my previous reactions in the best way possible."
