9780989402408: The Sump'n Else Show

Synopsis

Remember TV bandstand shows? Then you ll love our new book! The arrival of Rock n Roll music created a previously unexplored market for advertisers: the teenager. And in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, the Sump n Else show was often the highlight of a teenager s day. A fun, new book by Bud Buschardt, with his collaborator, Sam Sauls is being released in November 2014 by Entry Way Publishing. During the TV dance craze of the mid-to-late 1960 s, Bud Buschardt was unit manager-floorman-assistant director at the Dallas studio of WFAA-TV in NorthPark Center. Now Buschardt shares his personal memories of that bygone era in a fascinating, detailed format in his new tabletop music/television history book, The Sump n Else Show. Nationally, ABC-TV s American Bandstand with Dick Clark opened up avenues for local stations to produce their own bandstand shows. Television brought to the small screen, earlier days of dancing in school gyms where sock hops were born. The Sump n Else show followed the 1964 success of WFAA-TV s Group & Chapman show, a Saturday night lip-synch show for teens and their parents that starred Dallas/Fort Worth area teenagers. Sump n Else was designed for the teen audience because fast camera movements, video switching to the beat of the music and special effects did not appeal to most adults. The legendary show began September 6, 1965 and concluded on January 26, 1968. Sump n Else had new music, dancing, fashions, contests, food, and The Little Group a group of four girls dancing on a platform off the dance floor. Host, Ron Chapman often referred to them as the stars of the show . The original group included Calleen Anderegg, Delpha Teague, Joan Prather and Kathy Forney. The book includes updates on where they are and their accomplishments. Speaking of the host, Ron Chapman later made tremendous impacts on audiences of radio stations KVIL and KLUV. This is the only book that tells the story of Ron from his beginning high school days in the entertainment business through his successes at KLIF, WFAA-TV and KVIL until his retirement from KLUV. National guest music stars like Paul Revere and the Raiders, Herman s Hermits, The Monkees, and The Righteous Brothers made appearances on the show. Local area musicians including The 13th Floor Elevators, The Five Americans, Southwest F.O.B., The Novas, Scotty McKay, Kenny & The Kasuals, Those Guys and many more were also featured guests on Sump n Else. There are pages of great old photos and lists of songs that were played on the show. The book includes details about NorthPark stores in 1965, the studio location, and other shows that were televised or taped from there. Bud lets us in on the station staff and their jokes. Sump n Else was the inspiration for a music publishing company, band booking agency and record company. Collaborator, Sam Sauls, is the driving force behind the creation of the book. He believes that this piece of television history needs to be documented because his research showed that not much information is available on local television bandstand shows. Sam and Bud both desire and hope to correct some of the misinformation now on the internet about the show. The Sump n Else Show is not only for those who remember the show and the era of television bandstands, but it is also for a curious younger generation that might have only heard about Sump n Else from their parents or grandparents, or have read about it on the internet. Although the show was based in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, readers from other areas might reflect back to the television bandstand show that aired in their hometown. We look forward to music memorabilia collectors and television history fans displaying the book on their coffee table for all to enjoy, especially over the holidays.

About the Author

Bud Buschardt has been an adjunct professor in the Radio, Television and Film Department at the University of North Texas in Denton since 1972. He has taught courses in television directing, television production, advanced television production, radio-television announcing and special problems. Besides teaching classes, he works with students on the cable television channel, ntTV. Bud retired in August, 2007, from ABC Radio Networks where he was program director and air personality for their Timeless (formerly Stardust) radio station format. He began his association with ABC in 1989 when it was then Satellite Music Network. Buschardt was producer and host of Night Train from 1989 1999 on the Touch (urban) format. The weekly show featured 1950s 1960s rhythm-and-blues and soul music oldies. His Saturday Oldies Show aired on the Starstation adult contemporary format from 1991 1998. Bud s highly rated shows were heard on stations all across the U.S.A. From 1981 1991 Bud Buschardt was producer/writer/host of The KVIL Oldies But Goodies Weekend Show on Sundays. KVIL was the number one rated station in Dallas/Fort Worth. During part of his stay at the station, he restructured the KVIL music rotation system. Before his radio days, Bud was an employee of WFAA-TV from 1963 1981 where he served in various positions as producer, director, commercial and program writer, audio specialist and on-camera talent for the Music News Reports. His second week at the television station found him working on the Kennedy assassination coverage. In 1985, he teamed up again with WFAA-TV as co-producer of the Sump n Else 20th Year Reunion special. Bud continued to do freelance television work throughout his career. In 1977, Buschardt received a credit for music research in the Columbia Pictures movie The Buddy Holly Story. He checked the original script for chronological accuracies in the song titles that the writers had suggested. Where titles did not match the time frame, Bud recommended alternate songs that would properly fit the time period. Bud s private collection of phonograph records, tapes and compact discs totals about 300,000 units. His knowledge of music has led to writing columns for record collector magazines such as Buddy, Discoveries and Goldmine. He has also written special features for The Dallas Morning News. For his music knowledge, the Elvis Presley estate lawyers called Bud to testify as an expert witness in a case involving a fake Elvis Presley record that was on sale to the public in 1977-1978. Bud was a founding member of the Texas Music Association (1983 1988) where he served on the local and state boards of the organization. He is a charter member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame (2001 to present) and was inducted to the Hall of Honor in 2006 and into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2010. Samuel J. Sauls, Ph.D., retired as an associate professor from the University of North Texas in August 2013, after 29 years on the faculty in the Department of Radio, Television and Film. He joined UNT in 1984 as a lecturer and Station Manager of the University radio station, KNTU-FM, of which he served until 1994 upon completion of his doctoral degree. During his tenure, he also held the roles of Associate Chair and Director of Graduate Studies in the department. Dr. Sauls has a combined total of 15 years experience in commercial and non-commercial radio. He worked for four years in Saudi Arabia as the Audio Production/Language Laboratory Manager at the National Center for Financial and Economic Information in Riyadh, and was Director of Field Operations for City Colleges of Chicago in Europe while living in Germany for two years. In August, 2014, Dr. Sauls was presented the Texas Association of Broadcasters award for Educator of the Year .
