From the book’s original and new authors comes the SECOND EDITION of Awakening to Aging. The updated edition takes a fresh look at the joys and challenges of aging. With focus on Baby Boomers and the family elders many are now caring for, this deeply insightful anthology of personal stories provides practical advice, wisdom, and compassion for the many complexities of growing older. Topics range from health issues and cognitive losses, caregiving, and finding a retirement home to ethical wills, the aid-in-dying controversy, and spirituality. “Awakening to Aging offers gently and thoughtfully what is natural, paradoxical and beautiful in aging. The words in this book resonate with the authenticity of experience and insight.” (Myrtle Heery, PhD, co-editor)

From the Back Cover:

Awakening to Aging addresses the aging process from a variety of perspectives. The introduction reminds us that as we live we get closer to death, becoming more acquainted with it as our contemporaries die from the various diseases of aging. As a physician, I can honestly say that we do not know much about health, for we tend to equate health with the absence of disease. Surely health is much more than that as Barbara Sapienza expresses in her chapter, "Cancer Koan." At 68 years of age I can now appreciate life from a very different perspective, and my life experience guides me in myriad ways. If we continue to celebrate life and the quality of life, then quantity may become less important, and it may be easier to "let go" when health declines beyond repair.
--David Lakes, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF

As I grow older I find that two seemingly contradictory things are happening. First, I am able to view things with much more objectivity than when I was younger, and, second, I am able to enjoy and laugh at some things I would have once found disturbing, even frightening. The authors in this volume seem to have discovered much the same things, and it is a joy to know that they are willing to share these with readers. Growing older is so much easier when we can share both its joys and its challenges.
--Wendy Nelder, former President, San Francisco Board of Supervisors

What is a good death? I have heard many people, including health care professionals, say "there is no such thing." As a hospice nurse and administrator, I have witnessed some who died with grace and others who suffered terribly before they (and their families) were ready to let go. Often, the people who suffer the most are those who are resisting the inevitable and fighting for their lives. Our society has a long way to go in the journey of graceful aging and death. Every human being will age and then die, but each and every one of us can empower ourselves by preparing for that time. Awakening to Aging explores this problem with the gentleness that is necessary in order to approach such a grand and intimidating journey--the end of life.
--Deborah Quevedo, RN, PhD, Patient Services Manager at Hospice of the Valley, San Jose, California
