“I’m Jack. I’m black.” tells the story of Jack and his best friend Max. The main character glows with pride about himself, yet struggles to find acceptance from others who let their prejudices prevent them from giving him a chance. The book follows Jack’s hopeful optimism, to a very surprising ending. The story is told through sparse words, and stark silhouettes over brightly painted backgrounds. Jackson, who is also the illustrator, shows a masterful use of style and design, to convey the story’s powerful message.
